Are there any 'affordable' multi-channel network music players with an HDMI output

Really!!! How do you control it?
It runs LibreELEC which I control using the Yatse app on my Android phone.

LibreELEC (much like the alternative also discussed here) is an all-in-one operating system and Kodi installation with builds made specifically for the Pi.

I have found the Pi 5 extremely reliable for audio, but it seems to be a step backward from the 4 for video. I realize that's not important to you right now, but I wanted to mention it just in case.

Many thanks... This sounds like something I could work with.

Yes. Multi-channel audio/music only devices.
OK. My local brick and mortar store has something on display that he played some lovely jazz over, but I did not inquire as to what it was or what it cost, as I’m pretty satisfied with the streaming gear I already own.

It has its own screen, and there was no TV in the system. I don’t know what its output connections are, either. I can ask about that, but a lot if what he has on display is definitely rich boys’ toys.

Every streamer box I have seen with its own screen is Stereo only!

Yeah... but is it multi-channel capable. And it it it is, what are the devices?

My primary interest with playback devices is audio based not video...

This wasn’t a surround demo, so, yeah, it’s likely to be stereo.

I’m overall happy with my setup, using my TV and Harmony Elite remote to navigete menus, but I can sympathize with those who have different preferences.

I got that you don’t want to use a TV. I don’t know what its output capabilities are - I’ll have to ask. The owner used a touch screen on the device to select the music, which, in this case at least, was stereo.

So is mine, but the video just comes along for the ride. Its almost a necessity for menus and setup screens and other kinds of navigation. What about concert videos and bluerays with good graphics or music videos?

What is your reason for wanting no video capability at all at the exclusion of all else?

My display is a 120” motorized screen showing video from a UST, fed from whatever source my Pre/pro (Lyngdorf) has chosen. Believe me when I tell you that I DO NOT turn on the display stuff when listening to multichannel (5.1 or Atmos) music only stuff, or when listening to streamed Atmos music from my ATV4K+. But a phone based remote control is, of course, part of your toolset.
