Rolling back up to DVD-A....the DVD Audio structure is primarily an AUDIO_TS folder with lossless music. It can be lpcm or (preferred) mlp losslessy encoded.

What makes MLP preferred over LPCM ?

MLP = Meridian Lossless Packing, in other words the music takes up less disc space, allowing for even more music. About halved.
Atmos uses an extended version of it, but the MLP used on DVDA is only good for 5.1 channels as that was the DVDA spec.

What makes MLP preferred over LPCM ?

MLP is the only option for 24/96 5.1 as LPCM would exceed the max bandwidth for DVD. You’d be okay with 24/48 5.1 LPCM

There was a Profile 3.0 (profiles refer to players, not discs) approved for pure audio discs but thank god they didn’t use it - imagine being stuck again having to buy a new player for audio discs?

Yeah the max audio data rate for DVDA is 9.6 mbps. There is another strategy for dealing with lpcm but it requires using tracks of different resolutions...which is allowed.
