Finished the film this evening. Wow. I want to use a lot of profanity to express my enthusiasm!
The whole band kicks ass. Total professionals, balls to the wall. And I neglected to mention earlier that Bowie’s performance extends well beyond just vocals since he’s moving, PERFORMING, the whole time.
And from the credits, it appears that there were five cameras filming. Still remarkable to me that there is such uniformly excellent coverage with just five cameras filming just one show. I would expect that at any given time, at least one camera is down changing film. And they have ten minutes to shoot until they’re changing again. Were these guys able to communicate with each other via headset? Not only are they composing shots and focusing, they’ve also got to be planning out their next shot, where they’re going to go, etc. And again, there are tons of really great shots in this film, one after another.
The editing is also amazing. And it’s obvious that in some cases, shots of the audience mask the fact that probably no other usable footage exists that matches the audio. But again, those audience shots to me are an integral part of the film, and really pull me in about as close as I could ever hope to get to actually being there at the show, experiencing it. And I LOVED the moment when the action cuts from a long Ronson solo BACK IN TIME to Bowie in the dressing room. And you can hear the boomy sound of the same Ronson solo we just heard, only now you’re with Bowie, watching him change costumes, and then, when it’s time, walking back toward the stage while the music gets louder as he gets closer, and we re-join Ronson and Co. on stage. Freaking brilliant.
Another thing that struck me is that apparently a huge part of Bowie’s audience was teenaged girls. I couldn’t help but wonder how much they were actually digging Ronson’s extended solos…. And I’m guessing that’s about as far away from the general QQ demographic as you can get!
And all the flashbulbs made me think that there’s got to be what, 1000 still images from this show, shot by the kids in the audience? Wouldn’t it be cool to somehow gather any number of them all together, and as the flashbulb goes off, you see the picture snapped by the kid in the balcony? How many different ones still exist in scrapbooks and albums somewhere?
I am super excited to watch this properly with immersive audio over the weekend. And I’m also just a little disappointed that my first real writing on this forum isn’t even about immersive audio, but a FILM.
Oh well. Over to the new member thread to introduce myself….
