I also own an AVR with a poorly-performing DAC: the Marantz SR6014. It is plagued by a non-user configurable slow rolloff reconstruction filter. If I had known this before purchase, I might have looked elsewhere, but it really seemed that this was the cheapest way to get 7.1 analogue inputs, up to 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos processing, and nine channels of amplification in one unit. So far, I'm still relatively happy with it. When I'm listening to and enjoying multichannel music, I'm not thinking about the digital deficiencies.
Knowing what you know now, what make/model of AVR with 7.1 analogue inputs would you go for now?

My next purchase will be separates: a pre/pro with a good digital section and a multichannel amp with Hypex or Purifi class D modules.
I wish I had the space for separates but it's a complete non starter. It would be less of a problem if home cinema gear didn't come in such enormous casework these days, they make legacy quad receivers from the 1970s look compact and bijou.
