Hi all,

I opened an account just to respond to this thread. I’ll try to do my best to share some insight to the Atmos creation process and present possible solutions. ...

I’m interested to hear your thoughts and ideas how to constructively move forward.
Thanks for taking the time to reply! We try not to shoot the messenger here!
Many of us here have spent decades immersed in some form of surround sound. The news that many of these mixes, as well as some quadraphonic rarities, will finally be available on a wide platform was like a dream come true. it didn't take long for that gift to get soiled.
I understand that the budget is a major factor to produce a proper surround mix. But why bother spending even one penny if all it results in is a sloppy mix? Of course, it is just to be able to slap an 'Atmos' sticker on the album. I would guess that many Apple subscribers will most likely be unaware of the Atmos status since they are either listening through a TV screen or a cell phone. Or worse, they may believe that this is how a surround mix should sound!

So I finally performed a brief experiment--which is to say, I tried listening to some of these "fake" tracks on my MacBook Pro and my AirPods Pro (with head tracking) instead of on my 5.1.4 living room system. (For the record: I used the opening tracks of Caroline Shaw & Attaca Quartet's Evergreen and Steve Reich's Runner, along with Aretha Franklin's "Respect," one of the many fake Atmos tracks on 30 Greatest Hits. For comparison, I switched to Caroline Shaw & So Percussion's Let The Soil Play Its Simple Part and Steve Reich's Different Trains (with the London Steve Reich Ensemble), both of which have good-to-excellent Atmos mixes, and Franklin's "Chain of Fools," one of the nine or so songs of hers whose mixes predate this WEA phony-Atmos fiasco.)

To be fair, on AirPods and laptop speakers, the fakes don't sound awful. In fact, they sound vaguely spacious and surroundy, especially on the laptop. (I hasten to add that by comparison, the authentic Atmos tracks sound even more spacious and surroundy, and they offer the illusion of more widely dispersed and specifically placed elements, too.)

So I can't help wondering if this explains how all of these counterfeits are getting past whatever Apple's quality control amounts to--assuming there is any. If you were only casually listening to these tracks on buds or cans or a laptop, you might well be fooled into thinking they were genuinely mixed for Atmos, since they don't sound that much different than the real McCoy, even as they give an impression of being quite a bit different from garden-variety stereo.

It gets even more baffling, as I posted in the "Listening..." thread. On the pop side, WMG have done some brilliant Atmos mixes for select new releases, even as they bury us with phony Atmos crap from the back catalog. Meanwhile, on the classical side, Warner Classics have actually done all right by some titles from the Angel/EMI and Erato catalogs, even as Nonesuch--whose roster includes prominent contemporary composers like Steve Reich and Caroline Shaw, much of whose work would be really well suited to an adventurous Atmos mix--is now wasting everyone's time with the functional equivalent of all-channel stereo. Who in holy hell is minding the store at Warners? And will someone please explain to them that copying-and-pasting the stereo image from the fronts into the rears, sides, and overheads does not constitute "Atmos"?

You'd be surprised how many posts on QQ over the years have admitted they enjoy listening to stereo tracks in 'all channel stereo' mode.

(To me it sounds poorly, compared to actual upmixing)

Nah--I wouldn't be surprised. They probably include one or two of my posts. ACS was my default DSP for a while, too, until I discovered how good the DSU with center spread is. . . .

@humprof Mr. Han is back! However, this time he is Alan JS Han! (alanjshan).
Also he posted these, which I believe are real - and you like.
The plot thickens.

Well, I like Steve Reich, but not these mixes, which don't do his music justice. As far as I can tell, both of them paste the same stereo image into all the other pairs, sometimes with slight changes in EQ or added reverb. (In my post yesterday, however, I confused the issue by mistakenly citing Reich/Richter as having a good Atmos mix. The album I actually had in mind was Different Trains/Piano Counterpoint/Triple Quartet, performed by the London Steve Reich Ensemble. I've gone back and edited that post.)

In spite of my error, though, the Han case really is a mystery, since he is apparently responsible for some genuine Atmos mixes as well as this pile of travesties. For example: I think his name is on the Lake Street Dive albums and on the two Rhiannon Giddens albums that appeared last week?

I noticed a few more modern releases like Puff Diddy - I'll Be Missing You, Lily Allen - The Fear, Chris Rea - On The Beach / The Road To Hell plus a few more I just can't be arsed to check if they're genuine, as I know they won't be. Utterly bizarre choices that have no excuse to be upmixed... Warner Music are becoming a joke.

Becoming? :ROFLMAO:

I think there may be a purge underway. I just deleted dozens of tracks from an Apple Music playlist that I created for single surround tracks, that are now only stereo. These covered a wide range of eras and genres but were mostly things added fairly recently, when the flood of Warner fakes started. At least one complete album I had in my library, Tigerlily by Natalie Merchant, also has been reverted to stereo. I decided to do some checking after the Los Lobos tracks reverted, along with a bunch of Aretha Franklin, America, and random others I had come across, and was surprised at how many fake Atmos tracks are now just stereo -- not all, at least yet, but maybe the complaints have finally bubbled up to Warner and/or Apple and are being acted on...

Cautiously optimistic here. Thanks to @scooob, @Cheezmo, and everyone else documenting this in real time.

Regarding the bolded text in @fredblue's post: I'd sign on to that, as long as the upmixing technique makes use of--at a minimum--Penteo and Izotope (or their more advanced equivalents). You gotta at least try to spread out the soundfield and isolate specific sounds, right? It'd be great if AES or somebody could come up with some voluntary standards & practices for Atmos mixing.

Looks like that is going on. I just reviewed all the Dolby Atmos tracks in my library, the following used to be Atmos but have been removed...

330 tracks, 220 or so are Warner Fakemos added starting in August.

I hope it is forgivable to post a long list like this!
I’d have more hope if the Atmos mixes had also been removed from Tidal.

Interesting that the Chvrches album got pulled as that was one of the first "big new release" albums at the launch of "Spatial Audio" iirc
I hope Apple isn't just doing a blanket withdrawal of all WEA Atmos mixes. Better they should follow the example of record labels--like, say, Panegyric and DGM--who would send out "beta" copies of their products for advance testing and QC to a panel of QQ eminences grises. Pretty sure all those guys are still around and available ;). (Although they might not all have Atmos rigs. . . .)

Aretha Franklin is a good one to watch as some of those are good Atmos mixes and some are the upmix style, it does appear that only the upmixes have been removed as some of hers are still up, I just haven't checked carefully.
