Here's the only catch about the gentleman confirming that the format is DVD-Audio. We all know MANY or MOST people have no idea what DVD-Audio is...they mostly think it is just a DVD with audio!
So I just hope this guy knew what he was talking about. But then again, the track listing clearly states "[DVD-A - 5.1 Mixes]". And as far as the rest of the early catalog being remastered, he said if the sales are good, the other albums will follow. But we have see before that these projects get abandoned after a tease or two.

I want a real dvd-a as much as anyone here, but I have this feeling that it is indeed yet another case of mistaken identity. Look at the thread here about the new Ziggy Stardust disc - they've been calling that dvd-a too when it is not.

It just seems odd to me. Razor & Tie are behind the whole thing, but no R&T USA release dates? Sony being coerced by a little label into packaging a (almost dead) format that they never supported (and had their own competing format)?

I'd love these to be dvd-a, but I don't want to get my hopes up and be disappointed so I still say dvd-v.

I totally agree with you, the situation is bizarre and I doubt Sony can be convinced by a little label to release a DVDA, the enemy of a few years back in their eyes!

Although does anyone at Sony Music now even remember SACD, let alone DVDA..?!?

I'm not sure, but I think stormchaser may have been asking about the ELP releases, not the KEB one. I'm a little confused by the Razor and Tie posts. Are they going to release the ELP 5.1 in the US, or will we need to get them from the UK?

i could not get any information on a US release of the ELP & Tarkus box sets.

We can only hope that since Steve Wilson was involved in the remasters that is is truly DVD-Audio.

I'm hopeful too.. but SW's mix of Caravan's "In the Land of Grey & Pink" was only encoded in Dull-by Dog-it-all..
I mean Dolby Digital, ahem... so.. anything could happen with these ELP releases.

Yeah, Steven can suggest that it be issued in a lossless format but in reality he just gives them the audio files/tapes - they can author them into dvd-a, sacd, dvd-d dd, dvd-v dts...that's out of his control, and I don't recall where but he did say basically that when asked about the Caravan disc.

ringing a bell here too! I wonder if SW had any say in his own latest work being released in blu ray format? more control as an artist than just as a producer/mixer!?

"Happy Birthday to Robert Moog..RIP..I met him one time and what a kind and friendly man he was. ."

I met him when I was about 10......because my best friend's mother was his secretary. We regularly went into the Moog "factory"
in Trumansburg (NY) to bug Richard Sundquist's mom and get drinks from his bottled water cooler! We weren't too much into
synthesizers though, Rich was my first friend who had an actual electric guitar and amp. John

A google will show you the factory on Main Street, actually just two connected offices. It is now an Italian restaurant.......

It's official now, DTS, no lossless 5.1. From SW facebook page,
I've recently remixed 2 classic albums by ELP, their first album from 1970 and second album Tarkus from 1971, both to be released by Sony in July as 3 disc sets. In each case disc one is a CD of the original mix, disc two is a CD of the stereo remix in the form of an alternate version of the album, adding a lot of bonus material and previously undiscovered tracks recorded during the sessions. Disc 3 is an audio content only DVD containing 5.1 surround sound mixes in DTS, and PCM stereo.

at least DTS, which is fine by me, when it will sound as good at TAAB2 for example.

ah, so that English gent who gave the info as it being a "DVD audio" turned out to be wrong in the end..

we don't know exactly what flavour of DTS it is from this snippet, though its probably just "vanilla"/lossy as you suggest ..at least it's not DD, I suppose!

Lossy ELP sucks, but it's better than nothing.

Surround Sound From The End of the World to Your Town..!! So, I gather that it would be Four Rooms at the End of the World, instead of Two. Or perhaps, it's 5.1 rooms...

Definitely! much better than nothing! I really think we have Steven Wilson to thank for all these releases though. He's an amazing force for keeping 5.1 alive for us all. Bravo!!

Haha!!! Love it!!
One quad room at the end of the world..?
One 5.1 home theatre at the side of the house?

Right, I'm off to sit out in the garden.. it's too (unbelievably for London!!) hot and sunny to be stuck indoors on the computer! Take care, QL, catch you later! (y)

Pretty much what I thought huh?

I can understand people that don't work in the business not knowing the difference between DVD-A and DVD-V but these people that work for labels really ought to at least know the formats of discs. Can't say I'm surprised that they don't.

Take some classic recordings from the golden age of prog-rock, hire the best surround engineer in the world, and put out a product in a format that is not the best one available. Sorry, accuse me of sounding like a broken record if you wish but I can't at all be happy about that and what it bodes for the future.
