I must admit that I don't like the "dry" and perhaps a bit quiet vocals, the mix sounds a bit sterile to me.Just my opinion.
The echo on The Sherriff is overdone too - IMHO.

Copyproofing seems to be an expense few companies are willing to indulge in. I'd guess they consider the copy writer/designer/pagination guy should do it for free. In the past copyproofing was performed several times in each of the production steps.
In my work, sometimes end customers consider that the translator should do the copyproofing, for free again, not only of the text but of the page design, even if the mistakes are in the source.
I'm not intimately familiar enough with the sound quality of the original mix to draw comparisons but I know what I like and I LIKE the 5.1 mix for Triliogy. Great separation and clarity and I have no issue with the mix of the lead vocals. It's such a shame about BSS.

:musicGrrrr....my copy arrived a week ago now and as I've now got a couple grandkids living here with us it's put a real damper on my music listening time, especially for something I want to play out loud and a good decent volume. I hope I can get some time this weekend.

Jakko's 5.1 mixes are far more dynamic than Steven Wilson's. Just compare Homo to Thick as a Brick 2; huge difference. Jakko applies little compression; and I like!
Greg Lake's rhyme schemes are poorly thought out. Clearly he does not appreciate the malleable enunciation of a sentence. The syllables on one line to the next are not equal; very juvenile and poorly executed. The music is of course great.
This is my 4th Jakko mix and they are all thoroughly enjoyable. VERY crankable, no harshness in any parts and discrete.

I just received my copy of Trilogy from Amazon UK today. The Razor & Tie is being released here in the US about June 9th. It cost me less to purchase the import than it would be to buy the R & T release and that would be another month wait.

Of course Jakko was not working with the actual tapes but a digitized copy!! The original tapes are far too fragile now to be loaded up & abused in the mix process (and there were 40 reels of tape for the BSS/Trilogy sessions) and they will have been transferred properly at the FX Copyroom or similar facility that specialise in this process at 24-bit 96kHz resolution. This is normal.
There were some takes on the new Trilogy I didn't exactly buy them... The worst case to me was the Moog Indigo-like intro on the Trilogy track... I loved the original intro, with a reverb string sound far ahead 1972.

It does not look good. There were lots of problems with Brain Salad Surgery that pissed off all parties...
Big shame casue I would LOVE to get Works I & II as well as Pictures At An Exhibition.
"Pirates" with the orchestra may be ELPs crowning achievement. :music

That is a real shame. There was so much more to look forward to.
I wasn't happy about the BSS release either. I stuck with my DVD-A version of the recording that I still enjoy very much.
Works I and II would have been a real treat.
Oh well, here's to hoping for more sometime in the future.
Certainly, Pirates is the track I'd regret more no being able to hear it on 5.1.
I believe "In Concert"/"Works Live", or at least the orchestral tracks of it, would never be able to have 5.1 releases. I remember somewhere reading their 24-track system had failed on location, so they ended up using a 2-track back-up source for the album. But that applies only to the orchestral tracks from August 26th 1977 (I believe they are Knife Edge, Piano Concerto, PAAE 77, and, considering Works Live, Fanfare, Abaddon's Bolero, Closer to Believing, Tank). So Peter Gunn, Enemy God and others could maybe sound great on 5.1.
Most hate it, but I'd love to hear on 5.1 tracks like Letters from the Front (a lot of synth layers there), Honourable Company, Canario, Love at First sight.
Even Black Moon could have some 5.1 surprises.
Not to mention ELPowell, which is to me fantastic record.

I got to talk to Carl Palmer after a concert in Boston last night. I asked about future 5.1 mixes. He said "probably" and made mention of BMG now having the catalog and would want to have something new to help sell future reissues. Not quite the "Jakko's mixing Works right now" response I was hoping for, but better than nothing.....

Fascinating, for two reasons:
1) If BMG have an active interest in surround sound for ELP, then why have they not reissued the two surround mixes for ELP & Tarkus as part of the upcoming CD reissues at the end of July? They have been OOP for a few years now and there are still some I see everyone once in a while who would like to purchase these.
2) If I recall correctly, Carl Palmer had some less than kind words about some of the remixes when they were first released.
Regardless, I myself don't have interest anymore in more ELP surround mixes. I have what I need, but for the rest of you, if more does happen, I will be very happy for all of you.
