I have Second Sight's BD release and the 5.1 is good! Such a great movie too. Might have to buy it yet again, big sigh...

COMPLETE LIST of Criterion November 2022 releases:

I ordered the Hong Kong crime thriller 'Infernal Affairs' trilogy. All the prior blu-ray releases were plagued with quality issues, so fingers crossed for some 4K magic. Also, have to use the MyUS post forwarding service because Criterion won't ship internationally . . . so yeah, expensive. <sigh>

I see here in NZ that JB Hi-fi are now getting Criterion releases. They ain't cheap but just a heads-up to keep an eye on your Aussie stores in case any rear their heads across the ditch.

I'm revisiting the film that made me a Wes Anderson fan

Wes Anderson Rushmore
I upgraded to blu ray back in February, but i'm only just now watching this! wOw! I don't remember it looking this good on DVD! The colors and the detail are just stellar. The DTS Master Audio 5.1 surround mix is equally impressive: right from the beginning, Mark Mothersbaugh's score enveloped me, and the excellent soundtrack selections were a real treat; additionally, the surrounds were used to good effect in several scenes, especially the final play, during which my sub really kicked in! This film has lost none of its freshness and appeal for me; because it was my first Anderson love, it may be my favo(u)rite. Highly recommended! Stay Surrounded, Comrades

High-Def Digest Review

Drive (2011) 4K:

1. Allegedly a 2K upscale (not sure where that info has come from other than being repeated a lot on the internets) but with Dolby Vision graded by the original colourist. It looks superb. I popped the previous BD in after and you could get the BD looking VERY close to the new 4K/DV release though. Worth the upgrade still I reckon.

2. New Atmos audio. I watched it with this track and it sounds great. Not so much discrete surround action but gunshots, engine revs and lows from collisions/sound design/score sounded great.

3. Such a cool flick. I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/Drive-Ryan-Gosling/dp/B09VWTTC4R/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=drive+4k&qid=1661108531&s=movies-tv&sprefix=drive+,movies-tv-intl-ship,361&sr=1-3

Pete, is that the Steelbook Edition? Sure looks like it!

I believe it's a Native UHD4K remaster [if this info from Blu~Ray.com is accurate}:

Negative on the Steelbook: It's a black plastic case that got cracked enroute! Ugh.

The one I got is this one: Drive 4K Blu-ray (4K Ultra HD) (United Kingdom) which according to blu-ray.com, is a 2K upscale. How they've determined that though, I don't know. It would seem strange for a UK release to do a Dolby Vision 4K release from a 2K scan and get the original colourist involved, when a US native 4K scan is right around the corner. Still, it's blu-ray.com after all and their reviews/comments I've found to be full of error. Either way, the 4K release I got is VERY close to the original BD release in terms of detail.

Strange how some 4K releases can not knock your socks off whereas other BD releases of 4K scans are superb. For example, I recently got this BD Mr. Klein and if someone had told me I was watching a native 4K scan on 4K, I'd have believed them. One of the best images I've seen. Great flick too.

From SHOUT SELECT, the Native UHD4K remaster of John Milius' RED DAWN [HDR10/Dolby Vision/DTS~HD MA 5.1]

Just watched this one the other night, and for some reason, it just bored me to sleep 🕸️🤷‍♂️🕸️
Haven't seen it yet despite the 'glowing reviews' but it is available in 3D for a hefty price from some oversea's supplier. REGION B only:

And to be honest PUPSTER, you and I have both been wowed by all the excellent programming on Netflix, HULU and Disney+ ....... a lot of which is broadcast in superb 4K with HDR/Dolby Vision and excellent use of surrounds!

I wanted to share this animation shoty titled "Detritus"...this is NOT very Surround, only a few sounds AND especially the last sounds DO go to the rears using DPLII so I think it's pretty cool cause it "opens"up towards te end which is what it was all about...
I did this back in 1990/91, the animation was the genius of another Puertorrican called Rubén RIvera who did this IN PENCIL and using a 35mm camera in his house...the 16mm master is now unfortunately lost but it was featured in 2 animation festivals in the naughties...
I'd say the posting approach was VERY left field cause I thought that was what it needed..
I had to use a chronometer to sync the sounds...my weapons were my LesPaul, an ART SGE and a Roland D10, which was a BEAST and the generator of most cool sound effects/patches...hope you enjoy it...
