Avatar: the Way Of Water is the third highest grossing film of ALL time ......... And in hindsight, Waterworld isn't all that BAD ..... Too much was focused on its uber budget ....... Looks great actually in 4K. And turning urine into drinkable water ....... maybe that WOULD solve a LOT of the worldwide drought, Mr. E!

I wish that I was somehow eligible for even a minute percentage of the gross from Avatar, Avatar: WOW, and Titanic. James Cameron must be swimming in money. Still waiting for The Abyss, however. The man definitely knows his way around a pool of water LOL!

I picked this Criterion 4K release up during a past 50% off sale, and i'm just getting around to watching it!

The transfer is excellent. This film has never looked better to my (admittedly aging) eyes. The noir palette really benefits from the 4K presentation, and the titular blue dress looks great whenever it makes an appearance. In fact, the costumes and set designs really make me believe i'm watching 1948 Los Angeles. The 5.1 mix works really well, too! The music, action scenes, club scenes, street scenes all take advantage of the 5.1 soundstage, and Elmer Bernstein's score is especially good in 5.1. The extras on the blu-ray disc look like they will be a nice treat when I watch them later. Very pleased with this release. If you are a fan of the film, this edition is a no-brainer! Highly recommended.

Good to hear. Carl Franklin made some great flicks. Denzel has a hilarious line in it too that springs to mind sometimes when I walk into a public venue. You know the one!

Another Criterion 4K winner that i purchased long ago and fahr awhee and am only just now watching!

When i taught short stories, i would bring the unit to closure by asking the students to analyze a film, using the elements of fiction that We had studied. During the 1999-2000 school year, a student proposed The Virgin Suicides, and her proposal (persuasive business letter, study questions with suggested answers, poster with symbolism) was one of the best i ever received. Because of personal travails, i never got around to watching the film, so when Criterion last had their 50% off sale, i snapped up this 4K. Just watched it for the first time! I'm not sure how this film looked in previous iterations or on the big screen, but i can say the 4K presentation looks phenomenal, really evoking the sights and sounds and feeling of the mid-70s. The 5.1 mix really helps bring the era alive, and the rears are often active with ambient sounds, putting me in the action. The mix is especially strong with the soundtrack and Air's stellar score. Great stuff! I was already expecting a great experience based on my recollection of the student's project. This Criterion 4K release did not disappoint! Highly recommended!

A REALLY GOOD article and clip from Route 66 ... courtesy of the NY Times. Notice Majaris' thick 'Queens' accent in that clip. I have a few of the seasons on DVD but the image quality is poor. Wish they'd remaster it. In the very early 60's, a show way ahead of its time in scripting, acting, et alia!

Haha the very 1st VHS tape I purchased. Then Blu-ray 1080. No LD or DVD in between. I still get a good time rush when ever I watch it.

The thing about these older movies coming out in higher res video formats is sometimes it is distracting... you can see the defects in the models, practical effects, etc that were obscured before.

Very interesting that the next film you mention is Time Bandits. Another one of my faves of faves but also a good example of what I'm talking about. When they are in cages over the bottomless pit on DVD it looks fine. In HD you can now tell that much of it is black foamcore (maybe miniature green screened?) and even rubber cement glue marks. Maybe it's because I've got a fairly large screen also.

Anyway if you purchase & watch either of these films in 4K, I would certainly like to hear your evaluation!

Hopefully Pete, it'll be the last time you'll have to buy it....provided Paramount doesn't screw up the transfer like they did with the 4K reissue of Planes, Trains and Automobiles. 8K would be OVERKILL as 4K does pretty much capture the native resolution of 35mm film.

It is a beloved classic with Broderick and Hughes in their PRIME.
