Quite right! Not sure if it's just Ian Anderson or more Chrysalis/ Parlophone that has such an allegiance to Ray Shulman as the authoring person for these Jethro Tull releases.
Does he really do a bad job on these? No not really. As a matter of fact, I liked his work particularly on "A Passion Play" and even "Thick as a Brick" but the fact is if you're not going to have some kind of substantial video component, it really should be DVD-A, not DVD-V, and that's where these releases miss the boat...
Maybe one day when Warner goes head first into Blu-Ray audio and surround, then we will get these as full lossless but for now I will enjoy them as they are. Despite being DVD-V, they are far and away very high quality products.

I have to agree. The mixes are so incredibly articulate that it mostly compensates anyway. Lossless would be better, sure - but how much better?

No actually, Ray Shulman is Steven's choice (because of his consistently good job), but the lossy is the label's choice.

We actually compared lossless masters with the DTS encoded versions...

If you don't have the two to compare directly, or don't know the sound of the master inside-out, the difference would probably not be audible. The DTS loses some almost imperceptible sharpness in the transients and is almost imperceptibly less precise in the imaging.
Not things you would notice listening to just the DTS version.

It is another story with Dullby Digital though...

I've just finished absorbing A Passion Play, now this....

Just got this in today.

I still need a full listen through to the surround mix where I stay in the sweet spot, but so far, overall it's another winner.
Only complaint so far is that the drums are mixed WAY too loud on "Queen & Country", which is strange because the drums sit perfectly in the mix on almost every other song on the main album.
But Like I said, I still need a full listen without moving around, and I also need to check out the FIFTEEN bonus tracks also mixed in surround (is that a new record or something? Idk)

Once a poll is posted, it will probably get a '9' just cause it's lossy audio (DTS & Dullby) plus the mix so far hasn't blown me away like the big winners this year (TFF, D&W, Yes Album, etc)

Haven't listened to the bonus tracks yet in surround, but I did listen to the new stereo mixes of both the album and the bonus tracks, and I find the bonus tracks to be really quite good indeed. Can't wait to dig into the surrounds very soon!

Also, I haven't finished reading all of the liner notes yet in this new edition, but Ian Anderson does mention the mixing of this album in Quad around the time.

Mine arrived today as well and though I haven't had chance to listen to anything but the stereo yet, I'm impressed with the quality of the package. I do hope Ian and, perhaps more importantly, the label keep wanting to do these 40th anniversary editions.
