I've yet to order the Hemispheres set and I'm starting to feel tempted over the Electric Ladyland set too. Also looking forward to the Marillion Clutching at Straws set as well. [emoji4]

I think the Rush set is a risk...and a pricey one right now...if you wait to see if it gets favorable reviews on here you can still grab it later as a warehouse special on amazon...I think the 3 LPs are going to hold a lot of people back from a purchase plus Rich Chycki doing the mix adds a little drama to this one...just my opinion...but Ladyland is around one third of the cost of Hemispheres...just saying

I forgot about the Marillion release until I read this. I have the Hendrix and the Tull releases coming. Imagine was the last one I actually received, I'm gonna have to get the Beatles release (ironically, I'm gonna end up paying more for that than I did for the front speaker set I just gifted for my brother}. I am behind in stuff I want vs my wallet. I still haven't gotten the Guns N Roses I'm craving. I have a hard time plunking down big money for big sets just for the surround content. The Rush isn't even on my radar. I have plenty of underwhelming 5.1 Rush already.

they're having a 5.1 listening party on Tuesday! (shame its sold out or i'd be there..)

"We're incredibly happy to be hosting the world premiere of the new 5.1 Surround Sound mix of Jimi Hendrix's legendary 'Electric Ladyland' at our new home at Aures London on Tuesday 6 November. Hear it loud, in full, in the dark, like never before at our immersive listening session on the venue's formidable 50-speaker sound system.

The new mix was created by Jimi's original producer, Eddie Kramer, as part of the new 50th anniversary boxset from the album and it's the first time a Surround Sound mix of one of his albums has been created. One attendee will win a copy of the boxset."

I just listened to some of the LP just to get an idea of what might be in store for this upcoming mix. It’s been awhile since I gave it a good listen. Going in, I was a little worried that with only 3 instruments there wouldn’t be enough to work with here. But holy cow, I think this one is a can’t miss. The stereo mix on the vinyl is as close to surround as I’ve ever heard from 2 channels. While the bass and drums are pretty well anchored in place, the guitar parts are constantly swirling and bouncing around, left to right and seemingly round and round, especially all the phasey effects. In fact, I had to do double check to make sure I hadn’t mistakenly engaged a surround upmix mode.

I feel like this one could get wild if Eddie Kramer isn’t afraid to let loose and send Jimi’s guitar swirling all around the room. Oh, and I hope they are able to add a bit more low end punch to the bass and drums - those sound a bit thin on the LP.

Can’t wait until Friday.

Can't wait to hear Jack Casady in surround (too bad he only appears on one cut) -- and yes, like mrcond, I do hope they add a bit more low end punch just for Jack! :SB

spooky, I'm just watching him as the Great Santini in Columbo!

ohh.. not that Jack Cassidy..! ;):ROFLMAO:

Were those albums released in quad? :D
I... still do not have any urge to hear that...

This Hendrix remix really feels like it has to be real. I have no reason to date not to trust Eddie Kramer. (Please for the love of whatever it is people love when they say that, don't give me a reason to not trust Eddie Kramer with this release!)

Wait... Who is the engineer who claims to have remixed the original release? (Said Jimi came to him to rescue the album cause he didn't like Kramer's mixes.) There was some drama over this. It wasn't someone completely unheard of either which was the weird part. The mix as originally released is just SO obviously Eddie Kramer's.

Mind you, I don't think there's 0.0000000000000000000000001% of truth to the story!
Just remembered reading it a couple times now. Once even in Mix magazine a number of years ago. It was extra strange because the guy in question had mixes to his name and accolades.

1983 in surround...
Can't wait!!!

Saw Jimi twice at the Fillmore East truly amazing could not take my eyes off of him. If there is one artist and one album that is made for 5.1 this is the one. I expect my audio system to get a full-fledged full-blown workout. Might even need to give it CPR afterwards. I cannot wait.

Thanks for the reminder, I haven't listened to the stereo mix in awhile either. As I recall, there was a lot of "you can't do that!" stuff going on in Ladyland, such as reverse-polarity stereo flanging and the like. While these techniques created the amazing surround effects to which you referred, they were also known to create a lot of LP mastering headaches.

One fun thing to do with the stereo mix is to combine L & R and listen to it in mono - some of the effects sound completely different when they're electrically summed in this manner. This was another reason this stuff was generally frowned upon in the studio - it messed up the "mono compatibility," which could be an important consideration for radio play. But they did it anyway, heh!

Of course we are no longer even encumbered with concerns about AM radio sound, or bouncing a needle out of a groove! If Eddie and the gang have adopted the same anything-goes attidude toward this modern digital surround mix, we're in for a helluva ride.

[EDIT] Oops! I shoulda watched that video up there before posting this, heh. Eddie explains it a lot better... :) Thanks for the link Wave! And yes, after hearing Eddie's account of his approach to the surround mix, I can't wait to hear this!! Holy hell. Christmas is coming a month early this year!
