Although it's the stereo layer and not the surround....this sends cold shivers down my spine:eek:

I'd say past releases have show that the surround mix is generally more dynamic than the stereo, but off the top of my head I can think of many releases that sound amazing despite loud mastering (Tusk, Fleetwood Mac, PT's In Absentia and Deadwing, either Chicago DVD-A, etc). If it's loud, so be it.

I'm much more interested in the surround mix itself (placement of instruments, panning, etc), and based on what I've read so far I'm pretty confident it's gonna be good.

Loud mastering is something I can't deal with...but I've seen some horrible DR numbers and the mix "hides" it....the Flaming Lips manage to get it done with horrible numbers...

Don't want to argue, but I'm surprised you liked those FM 5.1's so much if that's the case. Aside from Mirage they're all pretty much pushed to the max.

I personally think the dynamics are overdone on a lot of SW's mixes- for example I can't listen to Hand Cannot Erase or Lightbulb Sun without constantly fiddling with the volume control. Sometimes a little compression ain't so bad IMHO. But I don't want to go way OT...

It didn't bother me...probably because the content is so good and the other factor is I can't really crank it up where I live....

Plus the surround mixes are excellent on those titles.

For me, it's all about the quality of the mix. I'd take an amazing mix that's bricked or lo-fi over a surround-lite audiophile masterpiece any day of the week. Of course it's nice when mix and fidelity are both top-notch, but when it comes down to it I'm here for the surround. Heck, I just did a whole thread explaining why a 40+ year old Q8 tape is better an SACD! We're all different I suppose...

I'm very surprised Jonathan that you find HCE and Lightbulb Sun to have 'overdone dynamics.' Lightbulb Sun sounds especially brilliant on my system and HCE equally brilliant. Two 10s!

As far as the Fleetwood Mac LOSSY remasters. Whenever I engage the LOSSLESS Stereo Tracks, no matter how good the 5.1 remix is, I shake my head. Compared to my original MLP DVD~A 5.1s of Rumors and Say You Will and even the Warner Japan SACD 5.1 of Rumors which sound fantastic, those LOSSY codecs wreak havoc with my mind. What would it take for Warner to add LPCM 5.1 in lieu of DTS or DD 5.1 ........ PENNIES, that's what!

As I said in the above post...a mix can "hide" some problems....like loud mastering...I was actually surprised to see the numbers on those titles...it just didn't affect me like other hot mastering usually does...and since you mentioned vintage recordings...I'm shocked to see how well those Dutton quads sound...I wasn't in the quad movement...back in the day....but it's hard to believe they sound that well with the equipment they had to work with...and for as short as Quad lasted...they certainly were productive...quite a few titles in that brief period of time..

I totally agree with you, Clint, regarding those D~V QUAD SACDs. Some of them ARE positively astounding and considering their paltry asking price ...... probably THE best deal in surround today ....... PERIOD. I could nitpick with a few of Michael Dutton's choices ........ but at this level of excellence, I won't bother. At least they'll all LOSSLESS SACDs and not DTS/DD DVD~Vs [90's technology, as I call it].

BTW, those DR numbers for the Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland Stereo 'remaster' are frightening. Thought Eddie Kramer would go ALL OUT and release the best stereo remaster possible. There always seems to be a fly in the ointment, lately, regarding these pricey box sets [excluding EL which was priced VERY WELL]. At least the 5.1 remix sounds encouraging.

I’m really hoping this is a great mix with decent DR. I’m far more emotionally attached to this album than many other recent & upcoming releases having owned the original LP and hearing it played at many gatherings way back in then.

The White album I’ve never owned but know the singles well but this EL announcement triggered huge excitement with me. I love it! A great album.

mostly in agreement.. though you do come across heavy-handed mastering that's just gone too far every now and again with a 5.1.. and it is sad because it can be detrimental to an otherwise decent surround mix. check out the stems on the 5.1 of Muse "The Resistance", everything clips like crazy and not only does the sound suffer for it but the surround balance does somewhat too and unlike 'post-mix meddling' (as i call it.. along the lines of the new Imagine 5.1 & Sgt Pepper 5.1's with 'fiddled-with-fronts') there's no quick fix to just raise Rears or lower Fronts &/or Centre etc. imho the damage is irreparable.

anyway, we'll all have our copies of Electric Ladyland very soon and can play with them to our hearts content, get them on the computer, fiddle about and scrutinise waveforms til our eyeballs pop out of our skulls.. or just enjoy the 5.1 for what it is.. even if its not all that.. ahh.. feeling (weirdly, uncharacteristically) kinda zen about it now :smokin

So, my Moose order is a little confusing. Since I bought both Tull & Hendrix from Moose...same release date.....only my Tull order shows a tracking number. Now, did they put both titles in 1 shipment? I'd like to think so..... anyway, whatever is in that package...it's out for delivery today as well.

Stop it Gos...this ain't fair!!
My eyes are going all Iguana green....;):)

And....what this all means is that my bank account has taken a hit...all at once.
