also CD 4 quads MUST only be played with a shibata stylus ( they usually say "quadradisc" and have all the music crammed closely on the disc and be careful buying used records of this type, too many plays on a standard stylus and they arent quad anymore

The excess wear of CD-4 records by playing with styli other than Shibata or like styli has ALWAYS been way overstated. That bit of nonsense was started by adherents to matrix systems and their manufacturers, particularly Columbia. The result of the marketing wars of the time.

It persists to this day.

I have experienced it. You still have quad, but overlaid on it are crashing sounds and a hiss. They go away when you switch the demodulator to stereo.

Google "Quadraphonic sound logos" to see some of the ways to get the information.

Note the following:
- If the encoding method is not mentioned, it is usually the original Electro-Voice matrix. It was the only matrix on the market at the time.
- QM and QX are variants of QS.
- HD, DQ, EV, QS, RM, QM QX, and DS are so close to each other on the record that you probably won't notice any difference in playback.
- There are three different groups of matrix systems:
- - The RM group (regular matrix) listed above.
- - The PM group (phase matrix) includes SQ and EV-U.
- - The UM group (uniform matrix) includes UMX, BMX, UD4, H, and Ambisonic.
- Matrix is the only way to put quad on many kinds of media.
- There are more Dolby Surround (DS) recordings than any other kind of matrix.

Discrete systems are usually incompatible with matrix systems.

The old VM-35F from Audio-Technica was also eliptical, but running up to 50kHz - what's important.
