I love Hank Williams' songs, but I have zero desire to hear them in "spatial audio." For that matter, like you, I don't understand the reason for "mixing" any mono recordings into Atmos.

The reason is obvious. People will see they are in Atmos, play them to see how they sound and the label will make money.

Right, there are loads of people who like music recorded in mono and can't wait to play it in "Atmos." And how much money does "the label" make on each of these astronomical number of plays?

Likely a stupid question on my part....but if a track is mono - isn't it still mono in Atmos - no channel separation?
Most of the faux mixes we’re seeing are that, yes. Just the mono copy pasted into all speakers. Usually they give at least a little effort by making some channels louder and quieter at certain parts to create the “effect” of surround.

That being said, with Revolver, Pet Sounds and the Red and Blue Beatles compilations, we have seen Atmos mixes of originally mono albums be made with true channel separation. That, however, requires more effort (and thus money) and seems to be the exception right now.

It only requires use of Peter Jackson's DeMix technology, a budget from the label, and a wiling mix engineer.

while this video is about movie mix configuration options, i wonder whether the same could apply to Atmos Music offerings? i.e. could Apple offer separate streams in selectable Atmos 5.x.2, or Atmos 7.x.4, or Atmos soundbar, Binaural/Atmos Headphone streams, etc., depending upon one's own setup.. 🤔

He does a really good job of describing why he is wrong throughout the presentation.

Consumers don't need tons of new confusing choices.
Producers don't need to make tons of new mixes of the same content tuned to every possible speaker configuration.

I would think selecting different Atmos mixes based on speaker configuration would sort of defeat one of the purposes of Atmos.
