@LennonCobain for posting. In 1988 (the year this album was released) I was fortunate enough to see her live in a small venue downtown Oslo. Only her and the guitar in front of a small crowd. She had our total attention. She was like a firework! A strong and remarkable voice and so much energy and dynamics. And these great songs of course, spanning from exploding 'Bring Me Some Water' to the more quiet and emotional ones like 'Precious Pain'.
I remember the original album as quite good sounding compared to many other rock albums at the time. Niko Bolas did the original mix and was in on the production side. Some of the songs got a very dry vocal which wasn't very usual at that time. The production and arrangements suits Melissa's songs well. I find Dustin Richardson's atmos mix to be a pretty good one. Not all of the songs screams for an atmos treatment, but his mixing choices works well. He has made some improvements and been able to keep the important energy in drums and bass.
Although Melissa Etheridge had greater success with some of her other albums I will always have a stronger relationship with her self-titled debut. A recommended listen if you are not familiar with it.
