16 bits of audio at 40o samples per second with only 2 channels is already 1.3 Mbps. If you want to make it 7.1. that's 4.6 Mbps.

That's possible over the Internet, but to be on the safe side I'd download it ahead of time. Don;t waste time streaming.unless you don't mind it lossy.

In @fredblue's absence this week (maybe he's just saving up for Sunday morning?), I'm gonna sneak in and do a linkdump of my own. Every year around this time, I compile a master file of a whole bunch of Top 10 lists (or 20, or 100, or whatever), specifically:

Independent Music Writers:
“Old” Media:
“New” Media/Music Websites:
I'm still waiting on a couple of my usual sources--the Francis Davis jazz critics' poll, maybe some additional genre-specific lists from Bandcamp, Pitchfork, Popmatters, and other outlets--but so far my master list is already north of 275 titles. Below is a table covering all albums on that list with known Atmos mixes (with album titles linked to Apple Music US). The first installment covers A-F (individual artists are alphabetized by first name, not last name); G-M, N-S, and T-Z are farther down in this thread.

hm = Honorable Mention; no # = unranked (or below a given list's Top 20); * = ranked as "outstanding"

Okay: I've just finished my final(?) additions to my obsessive four-part spreadsheet that begins above. (And I've added links to the other three installments of the spreadsheet to that post.) The Guardian took forever to reveal its top five choices--that's mainly what I was waiting on--and in the meantime Paste and Jazzwise and some other outlets also published entirely new lists, which I've incorporated (selectively, maybe even capriciously) into the master list.

Turns out there are also quite a few critical darlings from 2024--e.g., Adrianne Lenker's Bright Future; Beyonce's Cowboy Carter; Cassandra Jenkins's My Light, My Destroyer; Cindy Lee's Diamond Jubilee; claire rousay's sentiment; David Murray's Francesca; Gillian Welch & David Rawlings's Woodland; Helado Negro's Phasor; Hurray for the Riff Raff's The Past Is Still Alive; Jessica Pratt's Here In the Pitch; Johnny Blue Skies' Passage du Desir; Ka's The Thief Next to Jesus; Kim Deal's Nobody Loves You More; Kim Gordon's The Collective; Mabe Fratti's Sentir que no sabes; Madi Diaz's Weird Faith; Magdalena Bey's Imaginal Disk, Mannequin Pussy's I Got Heaven; Mary Halvorson's Cloudward; MJ Lenderman's Manning Fireworks; Mk.gee's Two Star & The Dream Police; Mount Eerie's Night Palace; Nala Sinephro's Endlessness; Patricia Brennan's Breaking Stretch; Still House Plants' If I don't make it, I love u; This Is Loralei's Box for Buddy, Box for Star; Tyler, the Creator's Chromomakopia; the Vijay Iyer Trio's Compassion; Willi Carlisle's Critterland; and Yasmin Williams's Acadia--that did NOT get Atmos mixes.

But if, like me, you're interested in checking out some new music and you prioritize listening to things with mixes that are least nominally immersive, then maybe you'll find my spreadsheet useful.

Adeem the Artist was the real surprise for me this year. A really interesting and enjoyable sound.

MC Solaar
Just spotted this new release, but looks like there were 2 other albums this year. He is a well know rapper in France, may be even a poet. I was kind of part of his security when he came for a concert in Marseille when I was in university back then…
Wow--I absolutely loved his first two or three albums back in the day. Eager to hear these!

Listening to Christmas tunes on Tidal in Atmos on Chromecast and they sound nice, making songs you've heard a lot more interesting.

On a side comment, I've read that Atmos can be compressed or uncompressed. I would assume streamed Atmos would typically be compressed while Atmos on my 4K discs or Blu-ray audio would not be. Since I'm streaming Tidal on a Chromecast, if it's doing the D/A conversion I'm sure it could better. I have a lower end Denon receiver that I can play Tidal via Heos from my phone. It seems to play stereo when I try to play Atmos through Heos. What are some good ways to stream tidal in surround? Better than the Chromecast, but not costing a fortune. I need to upgrade my receiver to something that's better. Do most of them do Tidal streaming in Atmos? Does Tidal stream in uncompressed Atmos when it's available? The app on the Chromecast just says Atmos and I don't see a way to check the streaming bitrate.

I think the Atmos mixes streaming on Tidal and Apple Music are 768kbps.
