MORRISON HOTEL - SACD

Man - I need to listen to my Doors SACD's more. I think I didn't give this enough credit. Waiting For The Sun is a great surround mix IMO. Not all are that good...but that one is excellent.

Now on to the song Blue Sunday...another excellent sounding mix. I think I messed up saying this disc was average...

Recently I've been playing those Doors Mch SACDs a lot too. They really are done nicely. Strange Days is also excellent.

Now listening to LA Woman.

The placement of the drums ruins those Doors discs for me. Drums in center and right front speaker, nothing in left. Stupid, annoying choice IMO.

From my seating place in the room - I cannot even detect that. I think I'd have to walk up to each speaker...or at least walk up near the fronts to notice. I sit about 13 ft from the fronts/center.

I think..at the time...we both kind of discounted the Doors SACD's...I think we expected too much...I let those discs sit for quite a while and I just recently revisited them...very happy with them...they aren't reference discs...but IMO they are the best available version to date..I have played LA Woman more than any of the other Door's titles...just because I love the content more..

No doubt in my mind that my expectation were way too high. Today, I'm going to clean up and organize my music cabinet...and get it sorted by artist. Then I'm gonna listen to those Doors discs again. Just to put it in perspective....any one of those Doors SACD would "run circles" around Pet Sounds DVD-A. I mean, it's no contest. So there's that....

I took the time to rip the Morrison Hotel to my server a few days ago and give it a proper listen. I agree with GOS, the drums are not a distraction on my system. The mix is good and the songs are great. I noticed in the poll thread people were taking off points for content. I wouldn't do that, I like every song...

+1...never heard any problems with drums...and the content is excellent..

Agreed. There is room for improvement. Generally speaking, I often feel that 5.1 is new and engineers are still developing and refining their skills, techniques and ears! ;) In several songs, Morrison's vocals & individual instruments could be better blended into the soundstage. But, considering the age of these recordings, I feel they did a pretty darn good job.
And you know me, I am overjoyed to have Mch mixes of these classics. :wave

My favorite go-to clean, balanced surround album. To me this is near perfection:

To me the best sounding surround album is Bryan Ferry - Boys and Girls SACD, not musically maybe but soundwise it can't be beaten

Anyone of you guys listen to Bryan Adams - Reckless Bluray? I like the sound of that one too, a totally different league compared to the cd.

I never had the cd but the blu-ray sounds great to me. The surround mix is different than most good surround mixes I'm used to. It doesn't sound that discrete but it works and produces this hard, rocking sound. I find it intriguing that Bob Clearmountain came up with this mix while taking a much different approach on Bob Marley: Legend, which also sounds phenomenal.
