Could I ask if the DVD documentary is worth the now silly prices as it's now OOP? I watched the Youtube of it and I loved it but is the picture quality and audio mastering any good? Is it PCM? Sorry, I realise these are visual questions on an audio blog. I'm listening to this again with new wonder based on the nature of just how it was recorded. I couldn't find it in the 4-channel review section though. I've ordered the Bluray though and thanks again for background and anecdotes!

I also spotted this version on bluray with very favourable reviews about the 5.1 mix so I've got two stage versions to look forward to. Ahem - as I said though, I'm really not a musical theatre kind of guy ;)

The only issue I have about the DVD/LaserDisc of the documentary is they didn't mix the twin-track Nagra sync tape to mono before releasing. Of course with one mic in the control booth and one mic on the camera, it was intended to be mixed to mono in postproduction.

As it stands - when they leave the raw Nagra sync tape the way it is - the channels often swap around with the control booth track sometimes on the left and sometimes on the right and vice versa with the studio track and can sometimes be distracting.

In the LaserDisc days, I used to make note of which channel had the main mix and then just swap channels as necessary. Anybody today though with a home-capture and editing program could easily re-pan the lead channel to the center (lateral channel) and then pan the other channel to the surrounds (vertical channel) and get a kind of pseudo-stereo that way.

Once you edit all the lead tracks from left and right onto one channel and then edit all the remaining tracks onto the other channel, just clone the mono ``other'' track to stereo and toss the left copy +90 degrees out pf phase and toss the right copy -90 degrees out of phase and mix back in. That way you don't have as much of that diffuse and directionless sound the way you do if you just do a straight lateral (0 degrees)-and-vertical-(180 degrees) mix.

The other issue I have is that of course Penne shot it on Super 16MM like they used to use a lot for most filmed TV shows of the period - but before being transferred to LaserDisc and ESPECIALLY DVD - they performed absolutely zero restoration in any capacity.

The only good thing they did was - instead of just going back to the original 2-inch color quadraplex video in the network TV vaults like they did for Free to Be... You and Me - Penne made `em at least strike a new dub to D1 from his mostly mint-condition ref print.

Negatives WERE available - as were hours and hours of outtakes which could have been included - but nobody wanted to take the time to transfer afresh from the negatives, transfer all the outtakes and perform the restoration.

But - as has been said before - it's nice for what it is.

Thank You Shirl-ee May [A Love Story] - Shawn Amos (DTS DualDisc).

Deeply personal, Shawn Amos has crafted an album in tribute to his Mother (who committed suicide after years battling depression) yet its not as heavy-going as the back story might imply..at turns the tunes are light and breezy, there's funky stuff ("Make It", bordering on disco but don't let that put you off!), rockier stuff, up-tempo country and swinging jazz. at other times its reflective & somber with a few sensitive ballads - it's a bit of a tour de force of singer-songwriting & performing I'd say.. It feels very "organic" without becoming hokey, it keeps its focus on the story of his Mum.

after just one listen through I can say I really like what he's done here and it feels like an album that'll "reward with further listening" as they say!

As good as you're going to get fidelity-wise for a non-DVD-A "DTS" DualDisc, the surround mix is very air-y, Amos' vocals (an acquired taste for some I'd imagine but I don't dislike them, there's a tinge of Don Fagen - a good thing - but some of his singing's a bit one-note and occasionally strained.. not damning him with faint praise but I almost prefer his Mum's voice!) are really nicely recorded and full-on in the centre, the front pair feature the rhythm section and a selection of other things (harmonica, acoustic guitar, piano, etc) and rears a selection of vocals (fun backing vocals/refrain in the rears in "You're Groovy" and funky female backing in "Make It" kicks in at front & rear simultaneously which really reinforces them) and there's keys, strings, banjo's (!), jangly guitars and other assorted (rather lovely) instrumentation galore back there. Ambient it is not.

I'm going to give it another few spins and post my reactions as I listen more.

If the beautiful little crackly old samples of his Mother's own recordings doing her thing back in the day don't move you, your heart must be made of stone! What can I say, I'm a Mummy's Boy..!! I melted! :yikes

oh and for just £2, come on, it costs more than that in electricity playing the bloody thing through power hungry amps! an absolute no-brainer for surround music fans, if ever there was one.

What does the "Time Loves A Hero" vinyl do thru the Matrix?

Got a real soft spot for that album, even though its a bit crap compared to most of Little Feat's stuff..

I'll listen to it again and get back to you. The KC Islands is magnificent, as is Trick of The Tail, and The Man album. Some of my best quad listening is matrix.

Machine Head - Deep Purple (DVD-A).

Playing this for the first time in ages.. god it's good! Totally different approach to surround than the old quad of course but its so much better than its reputation.

Prompted me to look through the liner notes and refresh my memory on who mixed it into 5.1 back in the day.

Paul Klingberg.

"Who?!?" you might ask..

Well, looking through his résumé, that guy did some absolutely stellar surround mixes of classic albums in the early 2000's..

Chicago - Chicago II, Warner/Rhino (5.1 DVD-Audio),
Chicago - Chicago V, Warner/Rhino (5.1 DVD-Audio),
Chicago - Chicago X, Warner/Rhino (5.1 DVD-Audio),
Carole King - Tapestry, Sony Legacy (5.1 SACD),
Foreigner - Foreigner 1, Warner/Rhino (5.1 DVD-Audio),
Foreigner - Foreigner 4, Warner/Rhino (5.1 DVD-Audio),
Earth, Wind & Fire - Gratitude, Sony Legacy (5.1 SACD),
Earth, Wind & Fire - That’s The Way of the World – Alive in 75′, Sony Legacy (5.1 SACD),
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery, Warner/Rhino (5.1 DVD-Audio),
Deep Purple - Machine Head, Warner/Rhino 5.1 (DVD-Audio).

TWO BIG (y) (y) to the man.

Oh and Sony even got his name wrong for the credits on the liners for the Tapestry MultiCh SA-CD...

.."5.1 Surround Mix by Paul KIngberg at Glenwood Place Studios, Burbank, CA."

It's a few hundred, easy. In all my travels, if I found a record store with more than one or two things I was looking for (other than new releases), it was a winner. Now, sadly there are a handful of good record stores left in both Chicago and Milwaukee.

I'm moving tomorrow. Most of my collection was already boxed. I still filled 16 boxes from Dell desktop PC's. A local college replaced 100 PC's, and I got the boxes. I still have 15 - 20 more to fill.

Your wish list must be pretty exclusive...

If ever I'd be tempted to hijack a moving van... Love to get my hands on those Dell boxes! :yikes
Moving is always a pain, but must be quite a chore for someone w/ your collection of hardware and software; I imagine you won't let anyone else box up all those goodies.

Got a real soft spot for that album, even though its a bit crap compared to most of Little Feat's stuff..

There is good center fill (voice & drums), good tonality top to bottom, and ocassional discrete action in ther rear speakers. I prefered the sound of QS matrix over the Tate on this one. The sound field was fuller, more pronounced.

I also tried a regular pressing, and the Nautilus had better bass and more solid placement of voices and instruments.

Some half speed mastered vinyl really shines in surround.

Thank you for the neat info (y)

the first European CD pressing of "Time Loves A Hero" (7599-27314-2) is pretty good thru PLII, so was just curious.. though the best Little Feat related thing that really shines in PLII is Lowell George's "Thanks I'll Eat It Here" (CD = 7599-26754-2) it's so good you'd swear it was genuine discrete surround..!!!

Have not heard Fragile in a while-popped it last nite, and had not heard it since my oppo upgrade and added the Denon. Wow! Holy shit! And to think I was going to sell it. What a mistake that would have been. This nuforce mod is something.
Since I don't have hdmi avr, I did the upgrade. Well worth it. I paid $250.00, it sold at $400.00 new, now at $200.00. If any of you guys have a 93 and do analog, here is the chance. I even had a converstaion with the guy who made it, how cool is that?
