Bruh, just run the hi-res stereo out your favorite up mixer. It's better...
I don't know. When I turn the surrounds up +2dBs, the center up +1dB, and the subs as loud as they'll go withought sounding bad, it's not near as bad as my first listen. It ain't a great mix by a long shot, but I think, with some very basic monkeying with the sound, it gets almost up to 2112 quality mix: Okay. To me, the big difference is just cranking your sub almost as much as it (you) can stand it. My standard sub level in my avr is -8dB. I have this on +4dB, 12dB louder! The slight center and surround boost helps a bit, but it's all about the bass (I'm sorry for referencing that).

Have you watched my analysis videos for Chycki's Hemispheres? You're chasing the dragon. And that's ok and understandable. It really, truly is a shit MC mix though. Seriously, upmix the stereo and enjoy!

Already just moved on to Moving Pictures. I think the fidelity on the 5.1 mix of Moving Pictures is much better than Signals, although I do agree that the second half of Signals is surround mixed much better than the first side. I still find Signals to be overly compressed sounding and harsh. I would love to hear Signals without the compression. Honestly, I would add Grace Under Pressure to the list too. I would put Caress of Steel and Grace Under Pressure neck-n-neck on the best outlier albums.
