The way I understand it if you play the SACD as DSD out it will be converted to PCM by the AVR (if you are using bass management/room correction)
Or you can play the SACD as PCM out. It shouldn't make any difference.
The DVDA is PCM out as well. So all 3 playback methods will be PCM and should be the same.
I'm new to this and I can certainly be wrong.

Honestly, Beefalo, I've played my SACDs both DSD out analogue into an all analogue Parasound P7 Preamp and PCM out into my Meridian 861 which converts ALL incoming signals into PCM and I've never heard a difference. To me, it has the same 'placebo' effect as turning off the display on your source player and/or pre/pro.........I'm simply at a loss to hear any 'positive' sonic effects.

Perhaps those with 'dog' hearing can.

I think you have the technical details correct. Except, why do the dsd to pcm conversion if you don't have to? Then there are on screen graphics and extras on DVD-A to consider.
IMO, if sacd is your only optical choice, go for it. Otherwise, I prefer DVD-A.

And recorded DDD which means PCM 16.44.1. Amazing how 16 bit can sound so great when NOT confined to the brickwall filters imposed by the constraints of the compact disc. You're actually hearing what's on those PCM masters in all their glory.

Two other examples that come to mind are Nils Lofgren LIVE and The Cowboy Junkie's TRINITY SESSIONS both recorded DDD 16:44.1 and as remastered onto STEREO SACD by Analogue Productions do sound superior to their CD counterparts.

I used to own an Auralic Vega stereo DAC that played PCM very well and DSD even better. It seems to me(and others) that the “off the shelf” DAC chips were tuned by the DAC’s designers to sound optimal for DSD. Now I have a Chord DAVE stereo DAC that sounds marginally better with PCM vs DSD. And trust me, I don’t have golden ears. And then there’s the PS Audio Directstream DAC that converts everything to upsampled DSD. Its designer, Ted Smith, sits unabashedly in the DSD camp. I don’t have any first hand listening experience to know whether or not the exasound multichannel DACs favor one format over the other. Brian Moura would be a good person to ask, though he may potentially be somewhat biased towards DSD(I’m speculating solely on the basis of his relationship with NativeDSD). For the record, no pun intended, I play all of my DV and other SACDs as DSD(not FLAC or WAV)rips.

Steely Dan - bodhisattva
was playing around with my Mandelbrot fractal program tonight and thought how that center black figure looked like a Buddha... so of course I had to play the SD song in Quad- ☺.
Almost revere Michael Dutton in that way...
