Very disappointed in this disc. I just felt like they were just going through the motions. I really loved the previous live effort with the full orchestra.

Yes, MM, TWO THUMBS WAY UP FOR THIS ONE:

The Mothers/Frank Zappa, Over-Nite Sensation and Apostrophe ('), in excellent conversions from QR and CD4, respectively. Great sound on both, and good quad on one. (Apostrophe is, as one critical listener has described it, "super stereo.") I yield to no one in my fandom for ironists like Randy Newman or Becker & Fagen, but I've just never been able to warm up to Zappa's arch, urber-sardonic style. These albums are still a good listen, though.

I quite agree, humprof, Frank Z is an acquired taste but I recently purchased this exquisite 2 DVD set, expertly filmed and recorded, fronted by Frank's son, Dweezil and what can only be described as crackerjack musicians interpreting classic Frank Zappa compositions:

It fits right in with the CDS! A 2008 brilliant CD box with two DVD set of Zappa Plays Zappa which is the name of a concert tour and band led by Dweezil, the oldest son of the late composer and musician Frank Zappa. The band debuted in 2006 with shows in Europe, Canada and the US. The shows is a collection of Frank Zappa's rock-oriented compositions from 1960s to 1980s. Apart from Dweezil on lead guitar, the band consisted of a mix of relatively unknown young musicians and older musicians who previously played with Frank. Among those, Napoleon Murphy Brock (sax, flute, vocals) was an integral part of the band, while drummer/singer Terry Bozzio and electric guitarist Steve Vai performed as guests. At several shows Frank performed a song posthumously via synchronized audio/video technology, notedly solos in Chunga's Revenge.

Frank Zappa, QuAUDIOPHILIAc (DVDA, 2004). I like this (fusion-y/jazz-orchestral/electronic/"other") stuff from the 70s better than the quad albums that were actually released back then. Really great mixes. Hoping Dweezil will now give this--and much else, both from the published catalog and from the family vaults--an Atmos upgrade.

Jonatha Brooke, Steady Pull (DVD-A, 2001). I forget which QQer(s) I need to thank for putting me onto Jonatha Brooke in general and this disc in particular. But...thanks! (And Hey Mods: I can't find a poll for this one!) Nice package with a solid Bob Clearmountain mix. The great jazzers Joe Sample on keys and Marcus Miller on bass. Guest vocal from Michael Franti (Spearhead). Dept. of Trivia: Brooke was once married to Alain Mallet, whose two recent Mutt Slang albums have fabulous surround mixes by Elliot Scheiner.

For Jonatha fans: she was the guest on last week's episode of PRX's Art of the Song.
