I'm sure this was highlighted on this site otherwise I would not have known about it.
Tried the search facility..no joy. Perhaps someone else will get more luck.

Bought it here

It is reference quality in its use of the surround speakers.
No vocals ..purely instrumental.
It is one of the most pleasing, under the radar purchases, I've bought in a long while.
Everything about it is sublime.
I realise it is my opinion but I cannot recommend this release enough folks.

Listening now to this 5.1 DVD-A, Flaming Lips-War With The Mystics. I was turned on to this from Derek's (Windhoek) thread about music that people got turned onto through QQ and surround. Flaming Lips came up quite frequent.
They are right, this disc is super good surround, sounds like Prince.

Incredible liner notes. Gives diagram and explanation of best surround set up and explains in detail each song, what the panning front/rear, etc you can hear as they wanted it to be, basically saying how discrete this is on paper before you even listen.

Come on DV a great 2fer Main Street and Keeper

That would be awesome (the Four Tops quads are all really nice mixes), but it's been said that the majority of ABC Records' multitrack and quad master tapes were destroyed in the mid-1970s. A real shame, as there are were quite a few excellent quad titles on that label.

This is a falsehood that's been repeated so many times it's somehow become accepted as fact. In the early/mid 70s ABC did apparently destroy some master tapes to cut storage costs, but it was multitrack masters for completed albums and mono mixes if a stereo mix already existed. Like so many labels in the 70s they had no idea that anyone would ever want to revisit this stuff or remix it decades later.

It would make no sense that they were destroying quad masters in the mid '70s when the majority of their quad LPs and 8-track tapes were mixed from 1973-1975 and didn't go out of print for the most part until 1978. Now whether these tapes went missing after that when ABC went through bankruptcy, or were burnt up in the 2008 UMG vault fire is another question, but even the least-forward thinking record exec wouldn't be destroying tapes of albums that they're still selling.

Even if some or all of these masters did get stolen, or perish in the UMG vault fire, there's still every chance that safety copies of some or all of them exist somewhere - a whole bunch of ABC quad LPs were issued in Japan by Toshiba/EMI, and most, if not all of the ABC Q8's that were issued by GRT in the US were issued in Canada as well in red RCA shells, meaning it's very possible that RCA Canada duplicated them on behalf of ABC and could have those safety copies in their possession.

In my opinion the reason none of the ABC quad masters have been reissued has as much to do with the glacial pace at which modern-day UMG licensing works, combined with the fact that the company is a massive conglomeration as a result of all the mergers that happened to lead to its creation. According to Billboard, UMG reportedly own somewhere between 2 and 3 million (MILLION!) tapes, and I don't think they have a great handle on what they own. Especially in these days of declining sales they can't plow money in to a robust vault cataloging program when they're only selling a few thousand copies per title of these crusty old recordings.

Hell, Main Street People and Meeting of the Minds haven't even had a regular old stereo CD release, and CDs have been around for nearly 40 years! Do you think all the copies of the stereo masters of those albums are gone, or do you think they just can't be bothered to put them out? I know which one my money's on.

I stand corrected. As you say, I'm just repeating what I've seen posted over the years here. What I'd give for two-fers of the Four Tops or Rufus...

Also, haven't several of their Q8 duplication masters popped up on eBay?

We can only hope that some of these titles can be resurrected out the vaults by the efforts of Dutton. If they are too crusty to work with; would D-V utilize safety copies for their SACD releases? Also, even if tapes are stored in conditioned storage, how long do they stay viable? I believe the larger, more return focused labels have little interest in a format like SACD that is already a narrow niche market; combined with older artists like Rufus whose fans continue to age, reduces the chances for new life of these titles. That's why I believe it's critical to continue supporting the Dutton Vocalion releases. There are plenty more of those old Quad titles I'd love to spend my days growing old with (in a shiny newly mastered format of course.)
