I have to agree, this disc was one of the best surprises of the year thus far. The rears aren't consistently active, but there's always a bit of overdubbed percussion or a burst of isolated backing vocals back there to keep things interesting. There's even some fun swirling moments with the guitar solos. My only knock on the 5.1 mix is that the rhythm guitars are somewhat dialed back in comparison to the stereo remaster (which sounds great as well). I'm going with a "9".

In case anyone hasn't seen it already, I had the opportunity to interview remix engineer Chris Bell about the making of this disc back in July:

Seconded. Nothing to add, these are my exact impressions and feelings about this release. Solid 9.

Agreed... where have the rhythm guitars gone?!

Was not a fan of this album when I streamed it (2ch) but bought it based on Billy Sheehan as a bassist being badass in general. Could say the same for Paul. It’s fantastic in 5.1. I had to turn my sub down a bit as it was booming when Billy hit the low notes. His bass tone in this mix is monstrous. The vocals are amazingly clear as well. Rhythm guitars might be dialed back a bit but everything else really cuts through because of it. Guitar solos are perfect in the mix too. I need to verify I don’t have my center channel boosted, the vocals anchored there are a bit louder than I’d prefer. My only complaint really, a 9!

If you have the L/C/R and subwoofer(s) to 'bring it', both Mr. Big SACD releases will reward you in spades in that slamming rhythm section.

This one hooked me. Giving it my third full listen in a week.

I didn't hear it back in the day, was too young and stupid to get past "they're a hair metal band" and just heard tiny bits of "To Be With You" in late night commercials which only reinforced that perception.

Really expected more spectacular solos from Paul and Billy on this record. Instead the playing is extremely tasteful and complimentary of the songs, which range from just okay to pretty damn good but not mindblowing. It's almost weird how even and focused this record is, because I came in really expecting weaker songs, but a ton of Paul and Billy tearing up the fretboards. This is just a really good, solid hard rock/pop metal album made by really good musicians, and I'm enjoying it a lot!

5.1 mix is damn good as above, sometimes sounds like things are being live-panned a moment too late. But the approach is really nice, breaking out elements into the surrounds as complements to an immersive mix, especially Paul's guitar fills. And bouncing him around the room is just fun. It's really just been all surprises listening to this: I had my head turned at the start of my first listen, and actually got startled by Eric's "HAH!" coming in so hot in the center channel.
