I am trying out the channel volume tool. A little unsure about the math needed to use gain function properly.

In the attached image I have Door's Break on Through to the Other Side.wav. The rears are almost non-existent and I want to raise their volume.

Questions are: raise gain relative to peak or rms values? I presume left rear to left front, right rear to right front?

If as noted, rears should be 3 dbs lower than fronts, using rms value, I figure gain would be 11.06 dbs gain for left rear and would be 9.74 dbs for right rear?

Using peak value, gain would be different for both rears. Any clarification would be helpful. Thanks.

Use RMS values but never increase so the peak reaches 0 (causing clipping).

You should also verify by listening. You may decide to alter the levels further. Personally I think the ‘-3db for surrounds’ rule can be broken. I like my rears to be clearly heard rather than buried. Depending on what’s in the rears you can often match fronts and rear levels IMO.

I don't know if this is something you can control/fix but if I use the Windows 'virtual desktops' feature the conclusion dialog from a "Split & Join Media Files" action will sometimes pop-up not on the virtual desktop where the program is running. Sometimes it's on whatever virtual desktop is running, but not always?

Steps to repeat:
Hold Windows-Tab and use that to create a new virtual desktop.
Start MMH on that virtual desktop
Select the "Split and Join Media Files" action and set up a series of joins that'll take a minute or two.
Press Windows-Tab and switch to a different desktop and do other things
The OK dialog from MMH may or may not pop-up on the active desktop.

I typically have 3 virtual desktops in regular use. It just aids my workflows better. So I'm often kicking off a long edit or join from one desktop and then switching to another to get other work done in the meantime. It's been a odd source of irritation to have to go on a bug-hunt to figure out on which virtual desktop that Ok dialog has gotten marooned.

It's a low priority issue, to be sure, but if you happen to find an easy way to pin all of MMH's dialogs to the source virtual desktop, it'd be much appreciated.

I’ll take a look at this and see what I come up with. Maybe I should remove the Ok dialog or use an auto close dialog.

Thanks for the detailed information to help me replicate the issue.

Auto-close would be nice.

Though when doing a lot of join operations it's nice to know the total count that succeeded, if just as a way to know if the total selected from adding whole subfolders matches the results created.

That or have the status bar at the bottom of the window show not just the total FILES to be processed, but also show the total number of joins that will be made.

If I have a set of 20 folders, totaling 72 files across all of them, all I see on the status bar is that '72 files to process'. It'd be nice if it mentioned in the status bar that 20 joined files were going to be created.

It'd be fine to remove the "(You can add another folder or individual files)" text if it makes the status bar text size unwieldy. That or make it a tooltip.

There are scenarios where one or more of the subfolders might only have a single media file in them, thus a join wouldn't happen on them. Knowing that I have 23 folders (seen via the File Explorer) and only seeing 20 in MMH would clue me into the fact there's three folders that need different handling. That's where my workflow has used the modal dialog as a double-check against a File Explorer detail list.

I've just uploaded MMH 8.0.0 Beta 5.

Fixes/Changes in MMH 8.0.0 Beta 5 over previous beta release:
Split and Join Media Files issue when running on virtual desktop fixed- @wkearney99
Tag & Rename tool: In 8.0.0 changed component used to update cover art
Other minor changes/code reorganisation

Get the MMH 8 Beta 5 update installer here:
https://reva.blob.core.windows.net/mmh8/publish.htm

MMH 8 needs Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop runtime x64 (if you haven't already installed its here):

Hi, I had a chance to test this software today and converted some .mka to .m4a. Very impressed! Here are a few suggestions, though:
  1. When using "Extract Audio from MKV" the tool opens a new windows for processing. After the extraction finished I closed that window and then tried to rename the source folder in Windows explorer. That failed because the source folder was still locked by MMH. The folder should be released when the process window closes, IMHO.
  2. When using "Extract Audio from MKV" in batch mode, the tool asks which audio track to convert. I usually rip both the Dolby Atmos track as well as the fallback Dolby Surround track to .mka for compatibility reasons. It would be great if more than one track could be converted to a single .m4a file but I'm not sure that is possible. M4a seems to be a container, holding either AAC or ALAC but I couldn't find any info if it can hold more than one audio track.

@HeresJohnny I’ve finally fixed the locking of files when MMH updates the cover images. I’m about to release MMH 8.0.0 which will include this fix.

I’m not sure if .m4a can hold multiple audio streams. I won’t investigate just now as I’m heading off on my yearly outback adventure on 20th June and don’t want to open a new can of worms just yet, as I have a list of domestic duties to complete prior to heading off.

This year it’s central Queensland and Northern Territory (crocodile country). My wife was born in Mount Isa (daughter of a mining engineer) and our daughter (a construction engineer) is now working in Katherine, 300km south of Darwin.

is the same version 8.0.0 beta 5?

No. It’s got a fix for locking of files tagged with cover art and uses a new version of Devexpress UI controls.

8.0.0 also shows the current cover art in the grid of ‘Tag and Rename’ tool, in previous versions only a generic icon was shown.

I don't think that is possible, at least I didn't succed to add multiple audiostreams to a .MP4 container a few years back.

The .mp4 (.m4a) container is able to support multiple audio streams, whether they be: MP3, AAC, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD (with or without Atmos).

I kind of. . Gave up and changed my way of thinking and moved to a .mkv way of life 😄

Would you plz, explain how you did?

I am trying to update to 8.0 from 7.0. I downloaded and installed Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop runtime (x64) . I get to the step where installation of 8.0 begins then just disappears and nothing happens.

One question, although I don't think it can be done with MMH: I need to join a mkv file with video with another mkv file with Atmos audio, video being 20 seconds longer than the audio. How can I join the files so that I audio starts 20 seconds after the video? Can MMH insert 20 seconds of silence at the beginning of the Atmos mkv?
Thanks!

Hope the holiday is going well :)

I'm seeing a couple of errors when tagging during the Extract Audio from MKV process (v8.0.0). . Once I select Get tags from MusicBrainz and enter the Artist and Album, if I click on get artwork and then double click the cover art I see :
Screenshot 2024-06-11 115939.jpg

There is a folder.jpg created in the folder but it has 0 bytes.

In addition, when you move to the Rename files stage, it gives the following error for each track, although it seems to continue and rename correctly but I guess its related to the image issue above perhaps :

The files can have the cover art added manually and play fine so its just an inconvenience ;)
