Can you please clarify your request? What is your input? You want to input THD files created from DVDAE and output as?
I rip .thd files from Blurays. I want to be able to load them up in "Extract from MKV" to output as m4a files. That tool supports .mlp currently which as far as I'm aware is the same file format just with a different extension, so it should just be a case of updating the file picker to allow selecting .thd files.

The term "mlp" refers to Meridian Lossless Packing, which is a lossless compression algorithm (also known a Packed PCM or PPCM). It was originally developed for the DVD-Audio disc format, which are encoded using lossless LPCM audio streams.

By contrast, Blu-ray discs encoded using lossless Dolby TrueHD audio (with or without Atmos) utilise a modified version of the MLP lossless packing algorithm and are 'syntaxed' as such. And this is where the confusion lies, as packed LPCM audio and packed Dolby TrueHD audio are in no way the same audio formats.

So there's two versions of MLP that aren't the same thing at all? Quite confusing then! MediaInfo shows the format of my .thd files packed into .m4a files as "Meridian Lossless Packing FBA with 16-channel presentation", with commerical name of "Dolby TrueHD with Dolby Atmos" and codec id of "mlpa".

It can be confusing if you don't understand what to look for...

Technically, a .thd file extension refers to an 'elementary' Dolby TrueHD (with or without Atmos) audio stream. And the term 'elementary' refers to a video or audio stream that has not been placed within a 'container' such as: .mp4/.m4a), .mkv/.mka or .m2ts.

The codec ID is a unique syntax code. There is a different syntax code (codec ID) for every single standardised audio, video, subtitle, etc stream that has ever been created.

To all MMH users:

I am away from home for next 9 weeks on a cross country 4x4 camping holiday across the south and west coast of Western Australia. I will not have access to my PC and only limited intermittent access to the internet. Hence very little MMH support by me during my trip.

I reckon he's off "gold hunting" in the outback...

No prospecting, although this time last year my wife found opals when we went to a Coober Pedy in central Australia (Opal mining town).

Sightseeing along the coast this time. Ningaloo Reef is our final destination before returning home. A week on Dirk Hartog Island, a short barge ride from the mainland, no food or water (available on the island), good fishing though. Camping on the beach.

About 8 days to cross the Nullarbor plain via Esperance to Margaret River first where we meet up with my wife’s brother and his wife to travel north to Ningaloo. Then back to Perth to visit friends and back across the Nullabour to home (Melbourne).

Sounds like an excellent adventure. Must head that way one day. Enjoy!

Making it even more confusing, if you rip a Blu-ray with a TrueHD track to an MKV file and play that in an Oppo, Oppo will claim it's an MLP track and decode it to PCM before outputting it.

???

My Oppo 203 plays MKV/TrueHD, sends HDMI bitstream to the AVR and my Denon displays Source signal TrueHD either 5.1 or Dolby Atmos.

I have a 203 as well and it's set to bitstream. But if I press the audio button on the remote control to display the available soundtracks, TrueHD in an MKV or MKA container shows as "MLP" and I just get 7.1 PCM output. The same file played through an Nvidia Shield results in my NAD saying it's Atmos. I wonder if there's some other setting I've overlooked.

The 103 did the same thing and, even more annoying, simply refused to play Dolby Digital+ in an MKV. Or, given the above, maybe I should say that's how my 103 behaved!

Using MMH with Dolby Media Encoder and Dolby Reference Player allows me to Decode Atmos files to WAV. I decoded an Atmos m4a file to stereo, which worked but this stereo file sounds different than when listening to the same Atmos track through Apple Music on headphones. If I had to describe it, the version on Apple Music has slight crossfeed/reverb between channels where the decoded stereo version doesn’t. Is this expected behavior and simply due to the differences between normal stereo and binaural headphone stereo?

Edit: Did my own research

My 203 audio button shows also MLP 7.1 for an Atmos/TrueHD in a MKV.
The only setting on the Oppo I know is Audio output: bitstream.

Look into your NAD, because it happens to me in my Denon that sometimes, changing the inputs, it does not recognize an Atmos track automatically and I have to force it using the "Options" audio in my Denon remote.

It did the same thing when I was using an Onkyo. I don't think there's any way to get Atmos from a stream that's seen as PCM.
