Got a response from Neumi:
Hi [PurpleMoustache]
Thanks for contacting us.
The issue you mentioned is a known bug, and we have already scheduled our engineers to fix it. Once the issue is resolved, we will provide the new firmware version for download on our official website. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we appreciate your patience.
Kind regards
[Neumi Support]

However .mkv is not an audio format it's a container format. What audio format has been muxed within the .mkv container?
Sorry. Mka,
.mka is also a 'container' so my previous question applies!

Note: When it comes to discussing playback issues and bugs with any device, detailed information is vital!

I was looking at getting one of these to stream Atmos music that I would rip from Blu-ray. I did not want to deal with trying to rip the Atmos mix and break into tracks. I would be happy to rip one MKV with everything that is on the blu-ray with the hope that playing it back via this Neumi Atom 4k Ultra HD media player would be the same feel as just playing the blu-ray with the menus to chose the audio options. Does anyone know if it would behave that way?

I could not get MKV files to play Atmos tracks on the player. I emailed technical support and was told it was not possible yet.

Perhaps the firmware for the Atom 4K Lite (you bought) is not as mature as the Atom 4K. Or there's an issue with the 4K Lite device!

Really? I can play all kind of mkvs with Atmos, that's the reason I purchased this small player
Nice one... So to confirm... You have the Atom 4K not the 4K Lite?

Also, out of interest, what firmware version are you currently using?

I've got the 4k, but don't know how to find the running FW version. For sure it's not the latest one as per your screenshot.
Are you running that one? I was thinking about upgrading it tomorrow, but if Atmos playback is at risk, I'll stay with the one I've got.

  • Initially, it doesn’t appear to like my USB-C to USB-A converters which means if I’m using a USB drive, it needs to be native USB-A.
Hi, and thanks, I just purchased one of the Neumi 4K Ultra based on your recommendation, and that also of Jonathan at Immersive Audio Album, who confirmed their Atmos MKV downloads will work on this device. However, you mention it requires a native USB-A drive. That's fine, but will it support USB-A 3.0, 3.1, 3.2? My silly Sony X800M2 Blu-Ray player only supports USB 2.0 (believe it or not). So I'm hoping the Neumi ports are more up to date.

I am using a Crucial x9 Pro 2TB with my Neumi 4k. This has a USB-C interface and works fine with a usb-a to usc-c cable.

Why is it silly? A USB 2.0 port technically supports 480 megabits (60 megabytes) per second, which is around three times the bitrate of the highest 4K UHD disc encode!
Not silly because of data transfer speed, silly because you have to search around for an old standard USB 2.0 stick... if you try to use a newer USB 3.0 stick it will not work.

Eh???? I have plenty of devices with USB 3.x ports that work perfectly fine with USB 2.x thumb drives. And plenty of devices with USB 2.x ports that work perfectly fine with USB 3.x thumb drives!

The drives and ports are backwards compatible with each USB version (even USB 1.x). It would seem your Neumi 4K player has a bug that requires fixing...

Out of interest, what file system/formats does the Neumi 4K players support?

To be clear, it is the Sony X800M2 Blu-Ray player that only supports USB 2.0 thumb drives. I have tried a USB 3.0 thumb drive and it does not work properly, while a USB 2.0 drive does. You may have a device with USB 2.0 port that somehow supports USB 3.0 drives, but this is not the case for the Sony device I have. Regarding Neumi, see their website, scroll down to "HDMI 4K Ultra HD Quality" section ... https://www.neumitech.com/neumi-atom-4k-digital-media-player/

Okay, just received the Neumi 4K and testing it out. The good news is that it plays MKV Atmos files successfully with all 7.1.4 channels, when you set Audio to RAW Passthrough. The bad news is I can't get it to play MP4 5.1 files with full surround... it only plays them as stereo, no matter whether I have Audio set to RAW Passthrough or Default. Anybody got a way to fix this? Or does Neumi 4K simply not play MP4 5.1? It is not clear in the manual whether it will or not.

The biggest flaw of the Neumi is that it will only pass surround audio in bitstream formats (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, etc). I'm guessing those MP4 files you have are PCM 5.1, which would explain why they're defaulting to stereo.

Well, THAT really sucks! I had no idea. It said it supports MKV, MP4, FLAC, so I just assumed that it would support multichannel audio from all of these.
So therefore there is still no affordable, all-in-one solution for playing all multichannel audio file formats? (and I mean currently commercially available, not buying an old Oppo machine for example)
