But that's fine with me. For what I'm doing with them, simply knowing with as much accuracy as possible what speed they were captured at is enough. I can digitally adjust to 76.59 or 77.92 or 78.26 or 80 after the fact.
In the process of obsessing over this I've just learned that Japan has both 50Hz and 60Hz AC depending on which side of the country you're talking about. I have several Japanese 78s, but the good news is that if I capture at 78.00 I can't hear an audible difference between adjusting to 77.92 or 78.26. I've been using 77.92 because the Columbia labels give Kawasaki as the city, which is near Tokyo, which is 50Hz. But that kind of guesswork and possible imprecision bugs me.
