I think what is most important at home is that your neck and eyes are relaxed finding a center area.

Absolutely.

Almost every big screen I see — every home, every hotel — is mounted too high. Correct height is simple: center of screen should be eye level when seated. (A similar rule involving ears applies to non-Atmos speakers.)

For my 77” LG, i bought an Ikea stand that raises it up about 18 inches to the perfect height.

When I first got a 65inch Plasma I thought.."man this is big"...one month later I wanted a bigger screen... the height of your viewing is more important than the distance from the display...I could never have a TV over a fireplace..

Studies of consumers who bought big screen show some of the highest satisfaction rates ever found (high 90 percentile) ... with one caveat: everyone regrets not buying a bigger screen.

NEVER buy the smaller one.
You will be sorry.

Markie, here's a deal on an LG 77" from Abe's of Maine:

BTW, I LOVE the LG Curved Screens. VERY CINEMATIC LOOKING!

So you had the late 70s Blake's 7 on US TV then? The picture looks like the Liberator! Liberator

My first HDTV was a first generation Sharp (they seemed to have faded quickly) a 45" that I paid 😬 $6,000 for. Had it for many years, but a power outage finally did it in (I was glad actually,'cause it had awful blacks and contrast compared to what's out there now.) Currently I bought a relatively inexpensive Samsung 46" a couple years ago, because I knew advancements like OLED were well on their way. Also prices on this stuff seems to drop fairly rapidly. I may wait to get an 8K and see every little blackhead on faces, as long as my eyes hold out. ⚱ But hope to get around 65-80" next time! Don't forget refresh rates to help with motion and tiring out your nerves, etc.

You can compare TVs on rtings.com

There’s not much between any of the OLEDs by LG or Sony, and not much between 2019 and 2020 models either.

LG supports DIY calibration with a built in pattern generator. You need to buy software ($100 odd) and a colour meter ($200 odd I think) and have a PC. Sony requires a specialist pro calibration. Ideally you need to do this once a year if you’re a videophile.

I went with LG for the DIY calibration and in AU it was $2k cheaper than 77 Sony.

Ralphie...we aren't talking about JUMBO screens in movie theaters...we are talking about a 77INCH display... some IMAX screens are 98 feet tall...so yeah you could break your neck looking up...and they aren't like the projector that you are going to get either...even a 100 inch projector screen only needs a 10 feet distance

My man cave is thirty five feet long and my new screen is 120" so you can bet I will NOT be sitting atop the screen. In any event, it's ultimately Markie's decision and I fear with all this rhetoric, the poor man is mightily confused at this juncture.

He's not confused...what model Sony projector are you looking at?

Actually, I really don't know. My Meridian rep got me a deal and although the screen has been delivered, awaiting set~up have NOT received the projector as yet. All I know is the price: $20K ..... I know, RIDICULOUS but it listed for $30K and the price just went up $3K.....it's a PRO model and he told me I would be astounded by the 3D. With all these Covid~19 restrictions, everything is ON HOLD. I will find out the model because I'm curious myself.

I have to ask the obvious......
$20k & you don't know what brand/model you're buying?

It was all part of a package deal but IF you want a real laugh, several years ago I went to the Meridian Studio in SoHo and they had a curved 144" projection screen and the projector they were utilizing was $250K and was equipped with an anamorphic lens which eliminated the black bars altogether. He said he'd give me a deal on the projector .... get this .... $125K and when I asked about the cost of the bulb replacement ..... $6K... I said SHOVE IT!

That 144" curved screen, BTW, was itself $20K!!!!!!!!!!!!

They were showing Lawrence of Arabia [the 2K blu ray] and it was mightily impressive but that type of set up belongs in Dubai ..... where that type of money is literally chicken feed!

SW, I'm in the September of My Years and this new system is my LAST HURRAH! It's either SPEND IT or leave it to UNDESERVING RELATIVES. I opted for the FORMER!

Just spoke to my installer: The model # of the Sony Laser Projector is 885ES. It's being delivered the second week of August.

Well it's been out a few years...so no real surprises for the installer...he's probably installed quite a few of them..should go smooth...show us some pics when it's done Ralphie..

Clinty, MANY thanks for posting that review in Sound/Vision because after reading it, I called up my installer and bitched him out. NOT A GOOD REVIEW.
He is looking into the next SONY Model, the VW995~ES which NOT only has the superior lens, but superior contrast levels and upgraded HDR10 and of course still has 3D......but the caveat....it lists for $35K.
