I noticed that 96/24 downloads few of the Black Jazz titles pop up recently for sale on HDTracks, with the rights holder listed as "43 North Broadway, LLC", so I did a bit of digging and found their website, which says this:

"43 North Broadway, LLC is a global rights management company focused on acquiring iconic heritage entertainment-based intellectual property (“IP”) assets including master recordings, music copyrights and songwriter royalties. 43 North has acquired over 100,000 copyrights since its founding, including but not limited to the labels: Metromedia Records, Private Stock Records, Roadshow Records, Everest Records, Tradition Records, Audio Fidelity, Sussex Records, Skye Records, Sierra Records, Jewel - Paula Records, Fire & Fury Records, Chief Records, Enjoy Records, Cash Records, Arvee Records…"

It appears that they've also bought up the rights to both the Black Jazz and Ovation back catalogs (or at least the majority of them) which were pretty much entirely single-inventory QS-encoded releases from 1972 through 1976, and started making them available via various streaming sites and download services. I'm going to include a table below of what I found on YouTube and HDTracks, but generally if these things go to one site, they go to others, so they're probably available for streaming via Spotify, Tidal, etc. and for download from Qobuz, and other similar sites.

I do have one of the 96/24 downloads, Gene Russell's Talk to My Lady, and the quality is excellent - DR in the 13 to 15 range and a much nicer tonality than the earlier CD version I've heard. I can't vouch for them all though - sampling some of the Ovation titles on YouTube, a few of them sounded like they were maybe needledrops, but the samples I listened to on HDTracks sounded better, so buyer beware. Perhaps they're upgrading things with good 96/24 transfers on a rolling basis.

You can find quad remix credits for many of these albums in the Quad Engineers section of the Surround Engineers tab at the top of the forum, but I find it interesting to note that several of these quad mixes were done by Tom Jung, who went on to form DMP Records, which was one of the first labels to release 5.1 DTS CDs sometime around 1996.

Obviously the quality you get from YouTube and other streaming sites isn't the same as uncompressed FLAC, but I figured for people with Surround Masters and other QS decoders that are looking for food for them, the streaming options would be useful because they'll at least give you an idea if the mixes are exciting enough to tickle your auditory ballsac before you spend any money on a download.

I'm pretty sure all of the Black Jazz catalog has been reissued on CD before, but I think that for the Ovation titles in the list below, a lot of them will probably represent the first digital release of any of this material.

Wow--this is really exciting, especially for the Ovation titles (most of which, as you say, have not been released in digital formats). Thanks for this and your many other public services!

I wonder how 43 North Broadway, LLC figures into the latest dispute over Black Jazz ownership and licensing?

Edit: I answered my own question by re-reading the original article. Dick Schory claims to have sold the label to 43 North Broadway, who cut a licensing deal with Real Gone Records for the latest CD reissues. But the son of Gene Russell (Black Jazz's co-founder) is disputing Schory's right to have done that. And he's not the only one with a claim to the company's title, which seems clouded at best.

Would love to know whether discrete quad masters still exist. The article claims that "the masters"--masters given by Erik Nuri, who claims to have purchased Black Jazz from Schory in the 90s, to James Hardge, another buyer who licensed the material to Snow Dog (and later died) before completing the purchase from Nuri--"remain missing." But which masters that refers to isn't clear. And it also calls into question what 43 North Broadway is using for these new streams & downloads.

(Further edit: waitaminnit--Dennis Weaver! That Dennis Weaver? Of Gunsmoke and McCloud fame?)

Awesome, thanks Dave, hopefully HDTracks will fill in some more of these.

I'd like to see HDTracks get this one:

I just found that album on YouTube with the phonographic copyright attributed to 'Tuff City Records' (the same goes for Dixon's other Ovation quad, Catalyst) so I'm guessing that 43 North don't own the rights to these two. I've added the link to the album to the table in the first post, but here's the link as well:

ETA: this link only seems to play the first track, no matter how I paste or format it - if you click the link in the chart above you'll get the full album playlist.

I checked the links on some of these from HD tracks and most come up as not available! Usually that means that someone else has the Canadian rights to them. I checked ProStudioMasters as well and nothing comes up. Always very frustrating!

Maybe they just are running late on the release; like this Bonnie Koloc.
* I'm not logged in to their site either right now. Why would they have it up there and deprive themselves of the income.

Thanks for the heads up @steelydave.
I found a couple of Walter Bishop, Jr. albums on Amazon Music HD in 96/24.

I emailed HDTracks this morning about the lack of availability of the Ovation titles and got a very unfortunate response (I would have bought them ALL!!!)

"Hi,

Purchase Not Available means there is an issue with the files or a rights issue requiring that the album be taken down. The page should be removed soon.

Sincerely,
Josh"

Well, there you go. I wonder if they'll disappear from the streaming services now, too.

(Further edit: waitaminnit--Dennis Weaver! That Dennis Weaver? Of Gunsmoke and McCloud fame?)

The Pink Floyd Vinyl Bootleg Guide

We had picked three pressing plants out of the phone books. The very first one we went to was Custom Fidelity on Santa Monica Blvd. in North Hollywood. I remember being really nervous when we walked through the front doors into an enormous foyer with a long intimidating front counter. There were huge windows at an extreme angle looking out to the street opposite the counter and I remember thinking "How do they clean these?". There was just one guy behind the big counter. He looked up at Larry and I and asked how he could help us. I swallowed hard and went into my rehearsed story about wanting to get our "garage band" record pressed. Before I could get half way through my explanation, the front doors suddenly flew open and the 'McCloud' actor Dennis Weaver literally stormed in. Talk about an entrance. He was wearing his full cowboy costume complete with ten gallon hat and ludicrous cowboy boots (bright red). He pushed in front of Larry and me, stomping on my toes in the process. He looks back at me and says "Excuse me sonny, I have important business here". Larry looked like he wanted to kill the son of a bitch. I was too flabbergasted to say anything. The guy behind the counter tries to explain to Mr. Weaver that he's working with us and he'll get help in just a moment. Dennis isn't having any of it. He demands to know, at the top of his lungs, in his fake cowboy accent, whether his album jackets have arrived and if they've been stuffed yet. Turns out Mr. Weaver considers himself a country singer and has made his very first album. At Custom Fidelity. Weaver turns around and faces me again, "I'm not just a movie star. I have my own record company!", he felt compelled to state. It was called Impressive Records. Ten minutes later, after Cowboy Dennis left, Larry and I finalized our own deal with Custom Fidelity and we had our own record company. It was called Wizardo Records. No phony cover story needed. No business license. No national television series. No adults. Just a set of stampers and a desire to join the most profitable and corrupt business in America. The music business! It welcomed us with open arms.

I learned from a feature story by John Murph in this month's DownBeat that several Black Jazz veterans (Henry Franklin, Doug Carn, Jean Carne) and others of that era (Gary Bartz, Roy Ayers, etc.) have new releases on a new label--the ironically named "Jazz Is Dead" Records.
https://downbeat.com/news/detail/jazz-is-dead-long-live-jazzhttps://jazzisdead.co/https://jazzisdead.bandcamp.com/
All of the "Jazz Is Dead" albums, 21 to date, #22 coming out in January, are in my opinion great jazz, and available for streaming and purchase from Qobuz!

And all of the Black Jazz label albums are also on Qobuz for streaming and purchase.

Just a quick PSA re Black Jazz albums in physical formats , ie LP and CD.

There are discs available, for sale at REAL GONE , music (LP,CD).

Last time I checked they had quite a few , but some need to be restocked.

I was on their site a couple of weeks ago , and I'm hoping this November they have a SALE , as they did 2 years back when I picked up five or six titles for half price.
