You should always be on the latest release version, which is currently 21.2 - issues like tagging support are constantly being addressed.

It needs to be 21.2 to get Matroska tags read by Kodi

Edited: Typo
Interesting--okay; thanks. I wasn't bothering to update b/c I knew that once the NUC arrived, I wouldn't be using Kodi on Windows anymore. I wonder why it's not balking at the tags on the other Matroska albums, only this one? No matter; I'll update and report back later...

Welp...same behavior. It's just the one album, and as before: I navigate to it (in "Files"), it lists all the tracks, I select the first track to play and then all but the first two disappear. (And only the first track actually plays--properly, as Atmos TrueHD. But all tracks play in VLC and Windows Movies & TV.) No idea what's going on.

Hold the phone--it's even crazier than I thought. (And again: it's just this one album; all the others are fine.)

It turns out--going by the little icon to the left of each track in the playlist--that Kodi is somehow seeing each track of this album as a "folder" rather than a file. So no matter which track I select to start from, it will display (and play) that track and display the next track--but it's seeing them both as folders. I can upload more screenshots if necessary...

Yes. Thats the correct behaviour, a single MKA with chapters is an ‘album’ with tracks.

You should force a rescan with new Kodi version first of course. Did you do that?

Kodi 21.2 needs to find the new mka tags and import into the database. Older versions don’t look for those tags and therefore they don’t exist in the database scanned from a previous version

Only it's not a single MKA with chapters. Each track--on this album and all the others from IAA--is a separate file. (And yeah--I instructed the new version of Kodi to rescan the entire library on startup.) So, for instance, the full tracklist for Aoife O'Donovan looks like this--each track has a "square" icon to its left:
Kodi 3_11_2025 4_39_08 PM.png

--whereas the full tracklist for Arturo O'Farrill looks like this (each track has a folder):
Kodi 3_11_2025 4_39_35 PM.png

If I select 01 - El Pijul, it opens a new list with just "El Pijul" and "Bemba Y Tabalo"--as proper tracks, this time--and will play the first but not the second. If I select 04 - Conga Patria, it opens a new list with just "Conga Patria" and "Cielito Lindo." Etc.

You don't appear to be looking at these through Kodi's music library views. They look like file/browser views (The .mka and the files size are the clues)

It doesn't make a difference; everything is scanned into the music library too. In music library view, each track shows up as a separate album. And if I select one of the "albums" (i.e., tracks), I get a playlist like the image I posted in #344, consisting of the actual track that corresponds to the faux album + the title of the (non-playable) track immediately after it.

There has to be something screwed up with the metadata for all ten tracks in this album, but damned if I can figure out what it is. It's not like the metadata is coded to treat these ten tracks as ten separate albums in a multi-disc set. But I think I've spent enough of my time and yours on this one little problem. I'll keep going with the rest of the library and ask Jonathan if he's willing to investigate on his end.

Can you please upload one of your files, smallest for me to look at please (see the tags).

What do you use to tag the files?
Thanks, Garry: I appreciate the offer, but I think I've finally figured it out--by opening one of the files in MKVToolNix, which I should have done from the get-go. Turns out this album packs separate Atmos, Auro-3D, and 5.1 DTS-HD MA versions of each track into the same MKV container, which (I think?) explains why Kodi sees them as folders rather than files when I rename each one from MKV to MKA. I'm expecting that if I simply extract each Atmos audio stream to a separate file, I'll be all set.

Learned something new about Matroska. Talk about Russian nesting dolls!

Minutiae: I've renaming Atmos MKV files purchased from IAA & elsewhere in order to make them taggable (and playable as music files rather than video files). And I've run into a problem. Here's my process
  • As per @HomerJAU's advice, I begin by renaming each file in Windows File Manager, replacing the .mkv extension with an .mka extension. Tedious, and I wish there were an easy way to just snap my fingers and do a presto-change-o, but...so far so good.
Try this for bulk renaming on the Windows side of things. You need to be careful obviously, it's extremely powerful if you play with it

Gentlemen, i have 7 of these that were removed from a group of NUCs we set up for Kodi. All are the same 120GB SSDs . They are free to anyone who wants them.

First come first served. Send a PM if interested.
