In another lifetime (about 30 yrs ago), I was the label manager for Chick Corea’s label, Stretch Records. Having just been acquired by Concord Jazz, the label celebrated its first release under the new arrangement “Remembering Bud Powell” featuring Chick, Joshua Redman, Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett and a still formidable Roy Haynes. The album release party was held at B Smiths supper club in Manhattan. And for the very lucky few (myself included) who witnessed a once in a lifetime performance, an unforgettable evening. RIP Roy and thanks for the music.

BTW, “Remembering Bud Powell” was released the same year (1997) on DTS.

Roy was amazing!!! We saw him about 8 years ago at the Phoenix Musical Instrument Museum. He started out slow, nothing spectacular. But as the night moved on, he continued to play better/harder/more emotionally, and he was nothing short of absolutely spectacular and amazing. One of the very best performances I have seen and I have seen a lot of live music!

Only a few months short of a century, what an innings he's had, and what a legacy he's left, playing with a "who's who" of jazz for over seven decades (e.g. Parker, Getz, Powell, Miles, Rollins, Monk, Farmer, Blakey, Dolphy, Tyner, Corea, and Metheny, just to name a few).

Vale, Roy, thanks for all the great music. 🥁
