Kenwood KR-9340 Quadraphonic Receiver

Rarity: COMMON
Average Sale Price: $250.00

The few KR-9340 & 8340's (..see note below**) currently available seem to be hovering around the price I've given above. However you can usually score these for much less.

I believe the KR-9340 was second in the range after the top-of-the-line KR-9940. The earlier (1973-ish) models have a bronze tinged lower front panel. The 1974 and later models are completely silver. Measures 21.5" wide x 6.5" tall x 14.5" deep. 47 lbs. 40 Watts RMS x 4. Optional KCD-2 CD4 Quad Decoder ....(Fits into receptical at back).

Below - The 1974 U.K.Trio/Kenwood Range with the Quad Receiver's on the Bottom but it seems missing the 9340.
**The 9340 may have been released later as the Trio KR-8340 in the U.K. & Europe, but I'm not sure....they do appear to look identical.

My first receiver was a Kenwood KR-5400 35 watts per channel and sounded great. It had a 4 ch/2 ch switch on the back that was designed to be used with some kind of plug in. Probably never got made. I beleive there was a KR-9400 that was quad capable or I may be thinking of the 9340.

The Kenwood KR-9400 was Kenwood's top of the line stereo receiver (...as opposed to the Model Eleven/KR-10000 Stereo Receivers not commonly available in all markets) during the same era (1974) that the Quadraphonic KR-9340 was around. I think KR-9400 also had a rear connection available to add an external QUAD expander amp or decoder...a lot of amps & receivers from this era did.

Most of the stuff in the 1974 UK Trio/Kenwood Brochure I posted was replaced by the next range which included the KR-9400....the Quad stuff it seems continued for a bit, but was not updated other than the previously mentioned bronze bottom front becoming silver.

cool 6 vu meters impressive- looks really tall/big - must have some decent power

check out the Kenwood KR-9940 thats on ebay right now http://www.ebay.com/itm/KENWOOD-KR-...TER-RECEIVER-NICE-/360371358849#ht_4153wt_932

did the Kenwoods have remotes as an option?

I don't believe the Kenwood had a remote option. It would have been a plug in unit...and there doesn't seem to be anywhere that I can see on the unit to plug one in..!! There is however a receptical on the back of these units for plug in quad decoders.

By the way, that's a very very high price ($395) for a KR-9940 on that link you posted. You should be able score one for much less than that....one with a few issues but in reasonable nick sold for $102 in the US a few days back...and a fully functional one shouldn't set you back more than $250 on a good day.

The top of the line KR-9940 was 50 Watts RMS x 4 as opposed to the 40Wpc in the 9340.

It's been many years since I had mine, not sure of the model number. The retail price was listed as $999, I bought it at a military audio store for $555 I believe.
Would have been about late '73. Had the modular CD4 plugin unit made of plastic. I'm thinking 40w/channel plus it had a bridged mode for stereo for higher output.
Had an earlier model with a remote for volume and I think FM presets.
Dang I just cannot remember the model numbers now. I traded the earlier model for some Infinity speakers and eventually sold the "high end" one to a friend.
Any of that sound familiar? CRS..........

Bad advertising. "...with a flick of a switch." Isn't a switch on the front of the darn thing if you look at it. Push of a button maybe. Or turn of a knob.

Sound like the author was flicking her/his BIC (lighter) too many times while writing the copy.

Very cool receivers.
