Hi there, to give you some background about me:
I was born and raised in the mid 60's on the more provincial fringe area of the Rhine/Ruhr region.
Sadly, I never got into contact with quadrophonic tech and music releases back in my youth.
Living (60+ years) in an apartment building with almost non existing accoustic dampening between the flats made very much a
headphones-only listener (for the sake of the peace in the 'hood). One thing that always bothered my about headphones was, that almost all music
was in stereo, and not really ment to be consumed with binaural headphones. So, finding the free JB-Isone-Pro VST (32bit) and using that with a VST-wrapper component in foobar2000 on my stereo music files was revelation to me (guess I have one of those Neumann-Kunstkopf Ku-100 compatible heads, so the settings worked with some adjustments to earsize settings quite well for me, giving me a nice illusion of using speakers)
(Sidenote for those interested (sorry, did not search if that was posted somewhere on the forum before), there is also a free 64bit version of the Isone VST (also for MacOs) on the ToneBoosters website, look for "Bustools v3" in their FAQ section.)
So, what brings me to a forum about multichannel sound/music/tech ?
I recently faltered and bought a m4 Mac mini (usually just a PC user) and because I was curious about spatial audio and headtracking,
so I also got me some AirPods .... and was kind of blown away.. that's not bad at all (... being kind of old school, I don't like the "pay forever, never own anything"
mentality of streaming services, so I tried multichannel Flac files, which could be played with e.g. QuickTime Player or Safari and play fine in the the 3d-audio setting
of the AirPods, but not loaded into Apple music ... and, of course, other players e.g. foobar2000 or VLC would not trigger/enable 3d-audio as available (not sure how they do that, maybe the approved apple players transmit more then 2 channels to core audio to trigger the internal atmos decoder ?) The infuse player also triggers
3d audio, so multichannel Flac multiplexed into MKV with audiomuxer (with maybe 2 empty bogus channels (centre and LFE) when you got a quad sourcefile) makes
for a good player/sourceformat combo on the Mac.)
