May I ask, which old & new model players are you speaking of?The newer models are nowhere near as good with audio as the older players.
I have a Panasonic BDP-10A (old, and doesn't play the Petty disk... and no firmware updates come out for this one anymore). You need to get yourself an OPPO BDP-93.
Of course, it's a $500.00 player but it's the best for the money.
