Since there's still no news about my glitch order (or waiting list) I gave the Tidal Atmos mix a go (only listened to the core 5.1).
Wow, much much better than the stereo mix! The whole thing opens up nicely and is a pleasure to turn up (
Master Plan is just majestic with the vocal reverb travelling across the room).
Even the songs I didn't appreciate much on first listens are easier on the ear- on
Demons I think the auto-tune/vocoder effect is turned down slightly (or maybe I just got used to it? It's still not a great song, though) and I'm enjoying
End Of Night more. Interestingly enough, it seems the high-pitched, sine-wave'y synth that first appears around 0:45 mark is missing from the surround mix entirely.
Stay also got more interesting with the surround treatment.
There's mostly dry vocals in the center and lots and lots of activity in the rears.
Even though I'm not crazy about the track, the beginning of
Demons with the synth lines panning 360 simultaneously in both directions is fun, the ending of
No Small Thing gets crazy too. The SFX at the beginning of
Rivers of Mercy is entirely in the rears (and what an eerie experience it is considering the recent events in Europe) and the whole track is just gorgeous. My favourite though has to be
Master Plan which sounds huge.
Here's hoping SDE gets their act together and gets the disc to me as I'd love to do better than a Tidal rip
