I hope this is the right forum for this question. I am trying to decide to purchase either the Broadsword box set or the Heavy Horses set. I would greatly appreciate any advice because I want to spend my money wisely and get the best option. Thanks!

Depends on what you’re looking for and which album you prefer! Broadsword has the best extras of any Tull set imo, but what’s the point if you objectively prefer Heavy Horses? Here are some more thoughts on the subject

Thanks for your quick reply. You hit the nail on the head about the fact that I do like Heavy Horses more so than HH, but the extras on Broadsword look fantastic and that's what is causing my indecisiveness!

I get suckered in by all the extra's as well. But in the end, I always listen to the one I like the most. Every single time. Now, if you're looking to buy and resell at a later date. You'd need to consider the value down the road. I guess.

Both are very good albums. I like Heavy Horses a bit better.

Thanks. I probably won't sell until I'm dead or 1 foot in the ground! I do think about resale value but I prefer to get something I will listen to. I value your opinion! I may be leaning toward HH. Such tough decisions! Right?

That's where I've always been at between the two. I also preferred HH over Stormwatch, which I may have missed out on because of my being forced into being a spendthrift!

Heavy Horses is also an older box and it’s sold out before. I might choose that one. Broadsword can probably be still had in a few weeks or months … it doesn’t seem to be a great seller. I obviously had to have both, the outtakes disc on Broadsword is killer.

Ideally you should get both but if you can only get one right now get the album you like more! In terms of the mixes, well they’re by SW so you can’t go wrong with either.

With Heavy Horses you get:

Original album (9 tracks) + 8 associated recrordings
Full live concert mixed by Jakko Jakszyk

With Broadsword you get:
Original Album (10 tracks) + at least 15 if not more associated recordings!
Live in Germany 1982 (4.1) mixed by SW.

Thank you all for your "good eye-sight, insight, and foresight!" I have chosen Heavy Horses! I know I will not be disappointed. My Amazon points covered all but 3 dollars of the cost. That's about the only way I can get things anymore! Now the quest to someday obtain TOTRRATYTD, Storm Watch and Broadsword!

If you have to prioritise, of the titles you mentioned I'd definitely place "Too Old..." last in line. Although it has, like any Tull album, a few noteworthy tracks it just doesn't have the same level of Tull "essence" that the other two have, IMHO. In addition, the remix by Steven Wilson actually had to use the multi-tracks from a television broadcast re-recording because the original tapes for several songs could not be found. According to IA, the band was required to re-record the album for broadcast due to some arcane Musicians Union rules. Although IA says that the re-recording was taken very seriously, you can nevertheless hear differences between that and the original master tapes. In any case," Too Old..." is a Tull record I reach for far less often than the others.

Wow! I did not know that was how it was re-mixed. That is good to know. That explains the subtitle on the box set cover. I have seen it ridiculously priced on discogs, ebay and Amazon. I kick myself for not realizing these sets were being produced. I was so busy with work. Now, not so much. I hadn't any interest in This Was or A. So, not sure if I'll get those unless I can get them for a really good price. Thanks again for the advice!

On the contrary, I love that re-recording of Too Old etc and it really elevated my opinion of the album. Also the mimed music video is a ton of fun on its own. I’ve laughed so much at that over the years and used it to introduce people to the band.

I will keep that in mind as well. I hope that one gets a re-issue! I bought the album when it came out. I was 12 or 13 years old. I still have it but it's pretty played out. I've done pretty good getting caught up on these box sets for a reasonable price. It helps having Amazon points!

What you neglected to mention is that almost 1/2 of the tracks did have intact multitracks and were able to be remixed to 5.1 by SW. Also, the entire previously unreleased quad version is included as well.

I agree. The re-record is quite good.and the video is a hoot.

I did say tapes for several songs were missing, not all. I do own the reissue and appreciate the effort that went into it, but aside from the title track I don't find the material nearly as compelling as what's on Stormwatch and Broadsword. However, to each their own.
