As far as the Flaming Lips go, Elliot Scheiner only mixed "Yoshimi".

Here's a few more that were missed:

Beck "Guero"
Sting "Brand New Day"
Olivia Newton John: "One Woman's Live Journey"
Faith Hill "Cry"

And sadly, two that were mixed by Mr. Scheiner but never released.

Van Morrison "Moonlight"
Derek and the Dominos "Layla"

Question: Did Scheiner do "Goucho" twice? For some reason I feel like maybe I heard he first did it for the DTS-CD and then got a chance to redo it for the DVD-A/SACD release...perhaps slightly different than the first???

Derek and the Dominos "Layla" was released on hybrid SACD and yourmusic.com has some for $6.99

They're still around? Not a bad price! That's where I picked up my SACD but that was back in the $4.99 days.

Anyway, it's too bad they decided against releasing Scheiner's surround mix for "Layla". I'm sure it'd be more to my liking than the version that was ultimately released.

I am not sure, but I think that the DVD-A and SACD are different, too. Just got the DVD-A, and I will do a comparison.

The DVD-A and SACD mixes are identical, although some have said that the DVD-A has a slight edge in the LFE department, but I would be inclined to say the results would depend on the particulars; equipment, room size, acoustics, etc.

From what I've read, the DTS version was deemed "unsatisfactory" by Fagen and perhaps Becker as well (despite Becker being unavailable for much of the recording process in 1980 due to a car accident) so it was decided to redo the mix after SACD and DVD-A had hit the scene. I've heard all three formats and have no major complaints about any of them, however I almost always reach for the SACD. The fidelity is outstanding with regards to my setup plus it's a hybrid so I can use it in the car, too. In terms of availability, the SACD and DTS are the formats considered to be out-of-print, but all 3 formats can still be had for about $15 if you know where to look...

This remains one of my top 5 go-to discs and I think it's one of ES crowning achievements.

Anyone know what the general or specific differences are between the dtscd and the dvda of Gaucho?

I read that Elliot pulled alot more material to the rears on the remix. When he did the original, he was a little wet-behind-the-ears (so to speak). I don't have the dts version to compare the DVD-A to though; nor the interview either. If you search for the article I'm sure you could find it.

Kinda wish I had bought the SACD version back when since I don't have a regular CD of "Goucho"... though I think I went DVD-A at the time since I was worried that the SACD might be a "Crest Cracker". It's been so long that I can't remember what the DVD-A sounds like.

A couple of weeks ago I found the DTS-CD at a used store and picked it up since I could throw it into my iTunes. I haven't really dissected the mix as far as what sounds are where, but it pleases me. It's gotta be one of my better DTS-CDs, so no complaints. It's almost scary to think there's a possiblity the SACD/DVD-A mix might be even better!

Thanks, it's interesting that he would go that route as he learns more whereas you could imagine other mix engineers going the opposite way. I wish others would take a page from his book--do you think he'd like a protege who has no experience? Someone has to take the torch.

Thanks for the link to the article, Zabble!

I wonder how many times they can just keep baking the original tapes? Not that I can hardly imagine things getting much better-sounding than 96/24.
