The London Symphony Orchestra is once again doing their Xmas sale - really great prices on box sets, and many single SACDs for GBP 5: https://lsolive.lso.co.uk/collections/2018-christmas-sale

Shipping to the USA is quite reasonable too (and VAT subtraction makes them even cheaper). As I recall none of their mixes are particularly discrete, but to hear one of the world's top orchestras recorded in DSD with some of the leading conductors...that's something major right there.

Thanks for the heads up, ubertrout. This looks quite engaging from the Ravel Blu ray disc: https://lsolive.lso.co.uk/collections/2018-christmas-sale/products/ravel-daphnis-et-chloe-suite-no-2

And this from Dave Brubeck & Sons & the LSO: https://lsolive.lso.co.uk/collections/2018-christmas-sale/products/dave-brubeck-live-with-the-lso

BTW, Clinty.....I'm Black Fridayed OUT! Such deals on UHD 4K movies .....bought about 15 for between $7.99 and 9.99 including some VERY choice titles. Also received a stash of RBCDs from the Shark, some of which were deluxe, for between $6.99 and $7.99 minus 15%. Bless the Shark! Some of them are as high as $30 each from good ole Amazon.

This may be an impossible question....

Which of the LSO recordings would you most recommend for a relatively casual classical listener? I'd like to build my collection a bit. I have the LSO Beethoven Symphony set already. I'd be interested in SACD and BluRay formats, mostly individual titles but if there's a great set I'd like to hear about it.

If you don't have the Beethoven Symphonies the cycle with Haitink is very good: https://lsolive.lso.co.uk/collections/2018-christmas-sale/products/beethoven-symphonies-nos-1-9. The Sibelius Cycle is the same - pretty uniformly good, and GBP 19 gets you the whole cycle on SACD and BD-Audio: https://lsolive.lso.co.uk/collections/2018-christmas-sale/products/sibelius-sacdbox.

Yeah, I know you said individual discs, but to my mind the box sets are where the interest is. The individual issues are five each, compared to under 20 for most of the boxes.

In Gergiev's Mahler cycle the 8th Symphony is the attraction, the others are mostly solid.

I also like the Faure Requiem recording.

I have this set (Beethoven Symphonies the cycle with Haitink: https://lsolive.lso.co.uk/collections/2018-christmas-sale/products/beethoven-symphonies-nos-1-9.); and I really enjoy it, feels like I'm sitting right in the middle of the Orchestra.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up ordering the following, all I could really afford at this time. I already have the Beethoven symphony box.
  • Fauré: Requiem
  • Mahler: Symphony No 8
  • Mozart: Serenade No 10 for winds 'Gran Partita'
  • Sir Colin Davis Anthology
Much appreciated!

20% Off Album of the Week - Sophisticated Lady Jazz Quartet, Vol. 1

Yarlung Records helped expand the DSD 256 section of NativeDSD Music's store in a big way a few years ago when they transferred 20 of their classic Analog Recordings to DSD Stereo using a HAPI Analog to DSD 256 Converter from Merging Technologies. The transfers were done in an amazing 10-day period with Yarlung’s Bob Attiyeh at the console and some tech support from Native DSD’s Mastering Engineer – Tom Caulfield. The project was so successful that Yarlung acquired a HAPI converter for their original recordings and they have since provided several memorable DSD releases at Native DSD Music.

Among these early DSD 256 releases was Jazz Quartet Volume 1 from the Sophisticated Lady Quartet. A fine group of young Jazz musicians who have already made their mark in the Jazz world. Native DSD is happy to highlight their first DSD release as our Album of the Week. This is an album that Jazz fans will want to pick up from the NativeDSD store. Along with their 3 additional DSD 256 releases.

"Sophisticated Lady jazz quartet pays homage to the Great Tradition of American jazz but most of their repertoire is written by members of the quartet. Unlike the majority of contemporary jazz recordings, which are carefully and surgically perfected in postproduction, this album remains raw and fresh. These tracks are complete takes, 'live to tape', without editing."
-- Bob Attiyeh, Yarlung Records

“More jazz records should be like Sophisticated Lady Quartet—relaxed yet focused, tradition-based yet modern, elegant yet conveying a sure sense of swing. The recording is so pure that you almost feel as if you’re eavesdropping on four musicians who seem completely in their element while performing, in a one-take environment, a set that’s evenly split between previously rehearsed arrangements and performances where they had one chance to turn a composition into a memorable piece of music. No splicing or editing here—just a live-in-the-studio recording where the mood, playing and sonics are so solid that Jazz lovers will wish that the mostly-classical label Yarlung wandered over to this side of the street more often.”
-- Jeff Wilson, The Absolute Sound
