The recent and upcoming gigs thread

Saw Mark Knopfler and band at the Greek Theatre. Never saw him live, he and the band were terrific. Wonderful show, from early Dire Straits (no Sultan though) to new album material.

Whilst the Massenet the other night was thin on plot, this one by Handel at the ROH last night was very much more complex:

Full of Roman imperial political intrigue this Bavarian State Opera production shared with Covent Garden, set in a modern office block recognised that Handel could rarely keep a straight face for long and played up the elements of pantomime and farce to great effect. We know that Joyce DiDonato is a majestic singer but she is also a fine actor and here as Agrippina navigated the tragic, comic and sexy aspects of this work perfectly. The beautiful signing of Lucy Crowe as Poppea was another highlight for me. The normal Royal Opera House orchestra was given the night off to be replaced by the specialist Orchestra Of The Age Of Enlightenment - whose fleet of foot playing was a total joy.

The mighty Crimson were in fine form last night in Atlanta! I think we’re very lucky that the current lineup are playing through the old catalog.

Indeed, including Cat Food this time ‘round! I was at the show. Brilliant. This was third time for me seeing this lineup. The three-drummer front line is a marvel of nature.

well, besides all three being MONSTER drummers, Pat Mastelotto told me a secret three years ago...they all have a click track with count ins..

I suspected as much. I don’t see how you could possibly achieve that kind of precision without a click. Particularly after long pauses and such complex polyrhythmic figures. But these dudes are freakishly good!

Recent gig.... Fleetwood Mac with Neil Finn in Sydney. Not a bad show, no 'Tusk' though which was disappointing.

Yes, very cool! it was nice getting to hear Cat Food. That’s a fun song. I noticed they were filming the show so I’m hoping we’ll get to see some sort of video from that show some day!

Ok, we're headed back to Atlanta tonight for another kind of"gig."
Today is my 60th birthday (10-4 Good Buddy!) and my best friend and sister got us all tickets for Craig Ferguson - "HOBO Fabulous Tour" tonight at the Tabernacle. This will be the second time I've seen Craig perform and it should be a fun evening.

Today is my 60th birthday (10-4 Good Buddy!) and my best friend and sister got us all tickets for Craig Ferguson - "HOBO Fabulous Tour" tonight at the Tabernacle. This will be the second time I've seen Craig perform and it should be a fun evening.

My thoughts as well Pupster. I see Taj quite often on our annual “Blues Cruise”. He headlines every year (also an investor to the cruise I believe). I have to say, his annual appearances are always unique with changing bands and of course one year with Keb’ Mo. I’ll update after the show.

Nice - we saw CraigyFerg Saturday night up here in Nashville @ TPAC. This was our third time and first since he's not doing a regular TV show. Wickedly unpredictable.

I was dilligent about noting shows attended for a while there but really fell off the log lately. I'll pick it up soon.

In the meantime here's the area shows I will end up not seeing:
Sept 18 - BOB MOULD - City Winery (Nashville) = Conflict; gifted my ticket as it was same nigh as SNARKY PUPPY with my wife
Sept 30 - DEEP PURPLE - TPAC (Nashville) = Cancelled this show only with 6 days notice due to "scheduling conflicts"
Oct 18 - MOTT THE HOOPLE - War Memorial (Nashville) = Cancelled entire tour due to Ian Hunter's Tinnitis flareup

OK Pupster, I'll start with the Taj songs first: 1) "Killer Floor", 2) "Catfish Blues and 3) "Hey Joe" He did these with support musicians from the Sling Brothers members - Henri Brown & Kevin McCormick (Slide Guitars) , Mato Nanji (Guitar), Chris Layton (Drums from Stevie's Double Trouble and now Kenny Wayne Sheppard) and Jimi Hendrix Experience bassist Billy Cox. Taj did definitely 'funky rock' renditions of the songs. Some players I neglected to mention that were also on the bill were Jonny Lang and Ana Popovi (another Blues Cruise regular). Henri Brown sang with / for many of the artist and had a lot of charisma. I should mention the Joe Satriani power trio that ended the night included drummer Kenny Aronoff (amazing!) and bassist Doug Pinnick. A great show made better with such a variety of artists for the 3 hour show.

Holy ***** man, I would have travelled to got to that show. I don't go to many shows anymore, because I think the majority of them sound awful-(too loud and distorted.) But I would have made an exception for this bunch! So what did you think of the sound?
