Well I was listning to my Yamaha RXV 3800 last evening and it stopped working. I turned it back on and a electricle spark came from the bottom and the wonderfull smell of fried components filled my sence of smell. Can the members here suggest a AV reciever My budget is 2500.00 .

I sold many Denon receivers over the years. They're well built, versatile and sound great. I have an old AVR-3801 (7 x 110 W) on my second system.

If you have the space, you may also want to consider separates, a surround preamp and amps instead. My main system is B&K separates.

Dennon and Marantz are the same company now. If I was you, I would scour e bay. They sell new stuff @ fantastic prices from very reputable dealers. With that money, I would step up to outlaw or Emotiva. Worth checking out. But all in all, I would take our lovley Qlinda's advice. She sold equipment and was trained.

Thank you Linda for your quick reply . Denon is a good choice for sure. Can you please advise me on what B&K seperates? I will make room for them . I want to set this new system up before the start of the M.L.B. season . I enjoy the game very much with Base ball season just weeks away the new system needs to be up and running for opening day. To be able to fondle and hear the units with a friendly sales person and the haggling that use to go along with the experiance. ( closer than 100 mi.) from me.

I sit here drooling over web sites that have ads for this stuff, when I was a younger man it was Penthouse now it's Sound and Vision and every other mag dedicated to audio. It's audioporn to me! with audiogasms.

Your right about the priority change in life . Well I have the Emotiva UMC-200 & Emtovia UPA 80 watts X 7 multichannel amp. on the list. Found a new Denon 4520 ci for 2000.00 on Ebay . Thanks for the tip.

When you're spending that much you might want to make sure you're getting it from an authorized dealer...if you want to reduce the potential hassle in case it arrives defective. At least make sure it will be double boxed.

You are right about that Elroy I called a E bayer about the brand new in box Denon 4520ci for 1800.00 . The shipper is from Canada The mans english was poor . The garuntee was 1 year. The other E bayer Has them for 2000.00 out of miami with a 30 day garuntee. I called Best buy and they have one for demo in the magnolia room so I will go down there this afternoon to kick the knobs. They have none in stock will have to order it . On sale for 2300.00 ( no silver face ) How ever overseas you can have a choice of silver or black . I will take a picture of the demo . Thanks for the advice

I called Best buy this morning to tell them I will arrive in 2 hours for the Denon 4520ci demonstration it is on sale for 2399.00. The women said that will be fine. Sounds good to me so I stopped in . Holy Hanna ! The young salesman knew nothing about my so called demo. No problem I thought its just a demo. We go into the listning room and the lighting is poor can you please make it brighter I ask. Thats as bright as it gets was the young clerks reply. Do you have a flash light ? No said the clerk . You see this was his first day back from a 2mo. medical issue due to something called a brain tumer. ( John is on the road to recovery worked for best buy for 8 years) So here we go turn it on and there is only the zone remote for the unit He cannot find the main remote in the drawer . Only happened to be a dozen of various makes. The unit was hooked to Martin Logun electrostatic and a small B&W woofer. No rear hook up So we pulled it out of the cabnit and we could only pull it out so far for the cables are short. So far so good. I apoligized to John for the stores poor hook up and display, its his first day back. I talked to the store manager and nicely explained to him the situation ( We have the same first name Charlie.) A explained how the stores rigging crew should have this room properly equiped and how important it is to have your high end gear be properly show cased. I did not brow beat Charlie. I must say he came back with a tiny key light it had one led and I laughed at its poor illumination, we all did. Im helping John replace the bad cable going to the woofer from the Denon. Woofer would not work for some reason with a faulty cable. So now we have a left front a right front speaker and a woofer hooked up . The source of music was a Denon dvd player some female artist named Adele I think. That was the only disk they had. Im thinking to myself this is so inept. John did show me the menue on the huge tv screen ( the tv cost 999.00 a cheap model) I go look up the manager in another room and he is looking for the main remote in a drawer did you find it I ask in a hopefull voice no he said as Charlie closes the drawer . I open the drawer and find the remote still in its wrapper. At this point I give him my pitch I know your asking 2399.00 for it on sale how about a deal since I called 2 hours ahead for demo . He offered 2200.00 I countered with 2150.00 Bingo we had a deal . I never got a decent demo. I thanked every body for there cooperation wished John goodluck on his health . Paid for the unit and will be delivered to the store this Fri. They do not stock the high priced gear. With all of that behind me I can honestly say please bring back the good ole days I miss days of yesteryear thats my story and Im sticking to it

I used to love going to Pacific Stereo when it was time for an upgrade. Listening rooms where everything was hooked up already, knowledgeable sales people, nice variety of equipment...and there were also a network of audiophile stores where you could spend the real $$$! That was probably a pretty good job back in the day, Linda.

I have a Denon 3311 and am very happy with it. There's a good forum on the AVS site for the 3311, I'm sure there'd be one for yours too. Many knowledgeable people, a little more snarky than QQ though sometimes. But you'll still get your questions answered.

Yes, my main system is over 37 pieces. It is half vintage '70's, and half modern gear. Although the modern gear is the heart and soul of it and performs spectacularly, it looks like nothing special. $6,000 for a preamp/tuner that isn't styled any differently than a $200 receiver, and two power amps that are nothing but black panels with LED's. Still, the performance is DY-No-MITE!! I guess that's what counts.

And operating most modern gear is at least partially, if not completely useless without a remote in hand!

B&K changed hands a couple years ago. Yesterday, when I tried to access their website, I got nothing. Perhaps they're extinct. Still, if you are willing to pop for separates, there are some other great options. If you're going to stick with a receiver, there are others as good, but nothing better than Denon. And, leevitalone is right, today's Marantz is the same stuff. I prefer the Denon styling, however.

Enjoy the Denon, and I'm sure you will. I sold thousands of them and have owned one for ten years. Although my B&K outperforms it, my Denon is FAR MORE user friendly.

Listening rooms where everything was hooked up already, knowledgeable sales people, nice variety of equipment...and there were also a network of audiophile stores where you could spend the real $$$! That was probably a pretty good job back in the day, Linda.

I have a Denon 3311 and am very happy with it. There's a good forum on the AVS site for the 3311, I'm sure there'd be one for yours too. Many knowledgeable people, a little more snarky than QQ though sometimes. But you'll still get your questions answered.

Like many other towns, there were several "hi fi rows" where every chain and independents has a location. There were dozens of areas like this around Chicago and hundreds of other areas with one or two hi fi stores. Roosevelt Rd. had Pacific Stereo's second largest volume store in the country. Our original store in Berkeley, CA was the biggest volume store bar none. Playback had a superstore there. Musicaft, Hi-Fi Hutch, Stereo Studio, Stereo City and Radio Shack rounded out the mix. A mile away, Yorktown Mall had Schaak Electronics and another Radio Shack which was a former Allied Radio. Oakbrook Mall down the street from there had another Playback store. Up the road from there was a Korvette City with the world's largest record department and its' own hi fi department. Every major brand was available at one or more places.

Most of these stores put salespeople through sales and product training before they ever hit the sales floor. Pacific started new people in the C stores, and moved them up to B and then A locations as they got more savvy. In order to work at Lombard, someone needed to have proven him/herself in smaller locations, both in sales #'s and technical expertise.

Today, the mentality of the big boxes is to throw the shit out here and the suckers will buy it. And they do. Four years ago, I was in my local Wal-Mart. A Customer Service Manager was being rude and made discriminatory toward me. He attended a local collage and didn't appreciate my lecture, which his Professor insisted he sit through. So, he was downright abusive and made sure to point out that he didn't like my lecture. I was in a hurry and had a meeting in the city I was en route to. Monday, I called the Regional Manager. Friday, I called back because she never returned my call. I was told that she was too busy with a new store opening to call me back. I E-Mailed the President of Wal-Mart. Three years later, I'm still waiting for a response. Not only would we have addressed that backk in the day, but the employee would have been fired. I haven't set foot in a Wal-Mart sweat shop since. All this is what makes America "great" today.

I feel your pain Linda, you can't pay someone the minimum wage and expect them to have any useful knowledge, or enjoy their job! Now you have Best Buy (sort of...) or custom home theater installers and nary anything in between.

my feelings also. I love the look of "vintage" receivers. My Marantz was stolen before I could buy speakers then. Went to replace it and all I could get was the "new" crappy line of "digital" units that looked a lot worse than they do now. Nice lights, often VU meters built in,the tuning indicators etc. Not cutting new, but they do look look car batterys.

Well I have The Denon 4520ci . I picked it up on March 15th. Been off shore fishing so it sat for a few days. . I have about 500 feet or more of speaker cable hooked up to various components. So I broke every thing down disconnected all 12 pair of speakers. Took most of Monday afternoon to get things rearranged. With that done I hooked the Denon reciever to the Klipsch RF7II and The converted Klipsch cornwalls for the rears along with the Cerwin Vega C-7 for rear. I miss having a paper manuel. The Cd manuel came with unit.. This is a big undertacking to get the reciever preforming to my sence of hearing. The next few days I will read the CD. So far I am disappointed on the sound coming from the rears . I was use to the Yamaha and the sound field of the Sansui QRXs. It is most likely I who needs to get it dialed in . So I am with holding judgement. I long for the simple days of yesteryear. I will post more later
