When I decided to upgrade to Blu-Ray and a Hi Rez satellite TV receiver I discovered I needed to upgrade my INTEGRA receiver as it only had one 1.1 HDMI input. I got the new INTEGRA receiver home and tried to weed my way through the telephone book size owner's manual before deciding to have the dealer come to my house and set the beast up for me. (My dealer is in the home custom installation business and has some sharp installers on staff.) What I found most frustrating was that just plugging a CD player into the CD player inputs did not do anything output wise until you "associated" the input with the output. WTF?! Even then the lead installer had to get on the phone with the INTERGA service department when he could not get the discrete analogue inputs to play my QSD-1. This was a long telephone call. The fix lay somewhere in a obscure deep sub - sub menu. The receiver also has that automatic room EQ function which is pretty slick. Once everything was setup and functioning correctly the sound was awesome! This IS the best my system has ever sounded. All I can say though is GOD help me if I lose or the dog eats the remote.

Justin

P.S. I also have an installer come to the house once a year to update the "firmware" on not only the receiver but also the Blu-Ray player and TV. (I am not exactly sure what firmware is but when explained to me I get the impression it falls somewhere between hardware and software, but I could be wrong.) Since the 1970's I have always considered myself in the big leagues when it came to setting up, tweaking and maintaining audio-video equipment, but anymore a lot of this stuff is getting beyond my ability and desire to do.

I hear you Justin the complicated manuels on the new gear is not for the beginner. They are indepth for sure . Congrats on your upgrade may you always be in the sweet spot. I have yet to hook everything up on the 4520ci I like listning to Jazz radio on the net and you tube . After the initial first read of my manuel I have found that it is user friendly.

Haha!! Love your comment on the dog eating the remote!

my main Yammy AVR came with 2 remotes; one a big heavy beast of a learning remote with an LCD display, which is mostly excellent, just some of the buttons are a bit tiny.. and it also shipped with a 2nd remote, a much more simplified smaller affair, that does all the basic volume control and input switching etc you need on a day-to-day basis..

..and I have a Logitech Harmony 1100 Universal Remote for my main theatre system, which I keep charged up as a backup in case the 2 remotes for my AVR both go bye-byes at the same time..!!

I have to say though that I bloody HATE the Logitech - and never use it.

it's one of those event-based macro driven activity centric things rather than just something you can easily select and control any gadget in the house individually.. so it does annoyingly zany things like switch off the TV (or worse still the Projector - death to the bulb, being switched On/and/Off by a dumb-ass remote.. or it shuts down the AVR when switching from one "activity" to the other..!!!

GRRR..!!! i regret getting it.. but it looks fairly pretty on the coffee table..

..it's just pretty useless..!!

its worse these manuals are all on CD now.. I understand why, save the paper, save the planet and all that.. but it's a right royal P.i.t.A..!!

it also doesn't help that the Denon manuals (among others) are in such dreadful "Engrish" or Jap-Lish".. some of its unintelligible..!!

AVS and AVForums have lots of useful "translation" and hints on their forums for how to get the most out of Denon/Marantz gear, there's a user "batpig" is their handle I seem to recall on one of them, who is pretty much an authority on D&M AVRs, I can't remember off the top of my head its been a while since I needed to setup a Denon AVR.

I say, the bigger and more complex the remote is, the better! I love the big Sony universal remotes that came with the late 90's/early 2000's Sony AVRs. They look like a 90's cell phone. They have the backlit LCD screen, and they flip open for more functions. Total beast of a remote, some people hate it, I love it. Especially since the codes for most other audio and video equipment are pre-programmed. All you do is go through the menu and find the device to program it. All brands, not just Sony stuff. I also have a hugish Yamaha learning remote. Learning remotes are truly universal and future proof (until remotes stop using infared all together).

..if in doubt, go large! :ugham:

Well I have a update on the Denon4520ci. After getting every thing broken down and furniture rearranged. I started hooking everything back up and all the speakers in the there proper place. For the fronts they are B&W 801 series 3 on anchor stands with castors. These are power hungry speakers for the front height speakers they are Polk Lsi 15s the surround are Klipsch RF-7 II the back surround are Sansui Sp 3500 a total of 4 pairs no sub woofer or center channel. I tried the Audassy settings and did not care for it. Manuely set each speaker to my taste . I can honestly say that the sound stage is really really good. The menu is user friendly. At 75% volume the remotes key board lights turn on due to vibration. Any vibration will set it on. While hooking up the Denon to the internet I noticed the remote is made in CHINA WTF. I do not buy China crap if I am aware that it is. I was aware that the reciever is made in Japan. The reciever meets my expectations with plenty of head room to power the speakers. The EQ is great you can set each speaker by it also the volume and crossovers now thats fantastic. One nice feature I like is that you can set the turn on volume. I watched a little of the Yankess beat Tampa bay yesterday and the reciever passed that test. Will the remote being made in China make me take it back to the dealer? I thought about it but probably not how ever it does rub me the wrong way. The unit plays so well that I can overlook the remote.

Go to amazon and get a Harmony remote. They are setup for each device over the web from thier site. It comes witha usb that plugs in your pc, and it progams it for each device. They have the complete Dennon line in the database. Real cool remotes, they do everything a factory remote will.

true, most of their remotes are great.. but just a heads up.. don't bother with their top of the range remote (Harmony 1100; the one with the big touchscreen) its a load of shit. lovely looking but useless.. I really regret getting it.

Word to the wise: I loved my Harmony when I first got it, but after a few years when I upgraded some equipment and found their database to be incomplete, I found I had to pay for tech support to even have any contact. I felt like that was poor customer service- once you're out of the warranty period, any problem will cost you money to resolve, even if the problem is in their software. The "Apple model" really turns me off; I will never buy another Logitech product.

I also was disappointed with a logitech product it was the z2300 speaker system for computer . It worked great for a year and quit. Anothe terrible piece of junk made in China.

I live in the Fishing capital of the U.S.A. Florida. At my local Sams club I picked up a bag of frozen scallops. On the back side was the words product of China. I did not buy it out of disgust.
