I have two Barry White albums, both of which sound great when played through QS synthesize. I would have liked to see 20th Century release his albums in QS, as they did the Star Wars soundtrack album. They'd have been awesome.

I have a vague recollection of a rumoured Barry White (or it may have been Love Unlimited?) Quad that snuck out the back door back in the day.. ringing any bells my fellow Quaddies?

I ordered this when it came out and somehow ended up with two copies. No, I'm NOT selling one! It's a great demo record. Unfortunately, there's nothing out there to hear the UD-4 side properly decoded and demodulated.

Yes and no, well sort of:

The UD-4 should decode pretty close with Sansui QS or RM decoders as it does contain (UD-4 that is) the BMX quad matrix. It's really unfortunate that NIPPON COLUMBIA/DENON marketed this format so much later than the big 3, othewise we may have witnessed UD-4 product become much more available for the quad consumer. At least as far as the EUROPEAN and NORTH AMERICAN markets would be concerned.

I tried it, but it didn't come close to either QS or SQ; the matrix is quite different, apparently, than the more established ones. Was UD-4 ever marketed outside of Japan?

There has been ads from the UK for UD4 demodulators. I am not aware of anything happening in North America with UD4.

UD-4 outside of Japan? Not that I'm aware of.Possibly an Asian Country like S Korea but that's a guess at best.

That matrix s/b close enough to a regular matrix from what I have read in past audio mag articles.A joint venture/invention of Duane Cooper (the Cooper Time Cube) and Nippon Columbia.

I made the comparison by ear. I compared a few tracks on the Quadraphile set, QS and UD-4 sides, through a QS decoder. The results weren't even close. I did the same thing with the SQ and UD-4 sides, and again it didn't come close.

There have been UD4 demodulators on eBay sold in the UK from Compcor and Denon. I believe these were mot meant as international units. They were only 220 volt, 50 cycle units. I have seen other print ads, some of which could be found on QQ with a search. I forget the other companies at this time.

Yes, those would be for the European market. For Japan would be 100 volt, 50 hz. I never saw any made for North America.

For me that Hifi test & demo disc does nothing to impress the SQ matrix.I don't know what they did wrong with the encode, but it is substandard SQ.
There are at least 4 tracks from actual SQ discs, and I have those discs in SQ but the Hifi pressing in SQ,falls short of those actual SQ quad discs!
I wonder what occured to fault the encode??

Don't rightly know, but the QS is spot-on.
