Just picked up another bargain at my local HMV store (yes, it's still trading!)

Black_Sabbath_-_Paranoid_(Deluxe_Expanded_Edition).jpg

25% off in the Blue Cross sale, £12!

So far, it sounds great even though I'm not entirely sure what a "5.1 STS" format is! ;) (I'm assuming the guy in charge of the sleeve misheard "DTS". I did get a little excited when I saw the notes on the back claim that the 2nd disc, mixed into 5.1 from the original quadraphonic masters from 1974 was in "DVD Audio" but I'm too cynical and rightfully so. This is just DTS 5.1, but for £12 you get a classic album, in stereo and 5.1 as well as a 3rd CD of bonus tracks made up of instrumental or alternative versions of the album tracks and some nice liner notes. Money well spent :)

have you played the DVD in this set yet? the sound quality of the quad/5.1 is - for me - absolutely bloody terrible. there's a far (far far far!!) superior (Romanotrax? from the quad reel?) transfer floating about online as a DVD-A ISO, that I urge you to track down and hear. you'll never want to play the DVD in this Deluxe Edition again, once you've heard how it should sound, I guarantee it :)

This week I've managed to snag a few bargains, namely Pink Floyd 'Dark Side of the Moon' SACD for £10 (looking forward to comparing it with the bootleg DVD-A Quad mix), Goldfrapp's 'Supernature' SACD/DVD-V for £5, Genesis' 'Foxtrot' SACD/DVD-V for £8 and Dire Straits 'Brothers in Arms' SACD for £7.50!

I also managed to get a second Sony 5.1 receiver for my studio (where I do most of my listening) for £12 and a second Pioneer DV-575A Univeral player for £18 off eBay!!

It's been a good week ;)

A good week indeed! All Great snags! :)

years back I paid £20 for the DSOTM SACD, £18 for the Goldfrapp SACD and £12 for the Dire Straits SACD, all at HMV Oxford Street. sometimes it doesn't pay to be an early adopter!

still, it evened itself out over the years, getting things like Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow M/C SACD in HMV for £14 and the ELP/BSS SACD for £15 also in HMV, the day it came out, I can't knock 'em.. I hope HMV can soldier on, although for Hi-Res and surround music it has been pretty lacking the last few years.

Finally scored America Homecoming dvda at Half Price Books. It was 9.99 and I signed up for their email program and got another 20% off. The Luther Vandross dvda is still there and the Frampton Comes Alive dvda that I saw a week ago at 50 bucks was gone. Very happy with the America since I have borrowed it from friends a couple of times and like it.

nice one! that America DVDA is one of my most played! Another incredible Elliot Scheiner surround mix!

so how much are they asking for the Vandross DVDA?

If you don't have the Vandross already, you should snap it up (if the price is right/condition good) as the surround mix is superb.

I've not given it a proper listen yet, no. I'll certainly keep my eyes open for that other quad mix. Thanks for the heads up :)

Seems to be the way with these things. Pick up a bargain one week, find it elsewhere the next for 5 times as much or vice versa! ;) Right now, I'm content with finding bargains. I have a wish list which I will save up for over time, but the longer I wait, the more these things go up in value :-/ The 3 Genesis box sets will be mine, one day ;)

Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (DVD-A)

Came in the mail this week but have not had the time to play it yet. Not sure why I never had it before, maybe because the regular cd was already in the house I suppose.

The only problem I have with the Flaming Lips 5.1 mixes is that they are so brutally limited in the mastering, which totally removes the whole point of high resolution.
For a really immersive surround mix, grab a copy of "The Vicar - Songbook 1" (shameless self-promotion there).

Getting back on thread, just got an old DualDisc of Richard Thompson - Old Kit Bag - with an Audio_TS included at 24/96 in 5.1 & stereo.
Admittedly the surround mix can best be described as "subtle" but it's a silverline.....so what did we expect really?

Bowie - Young Americans

Never bought this before but the wife wanted it as she's a bigger Bowie fan than I. Playing it now, liking it more than I ever did before. Solid mix.
