Thank you for taking the time to explain it all, I do appreciate it :)

FWIW, my Universal player reads this Holst Planets disc as a redbook CD, so I tried it thru PLII and it was very nice indeed with lots of neat rear activity.

Was so impressed/surprised by it in fact, I went hunting for more Telarc "Surround Sound" CDs and bought a few more tonight.

Wendy Carlos' "Switched On Bach 2000", The Ray Brown Trio's "Summertime" & Steve Reid's Bamboo Forest's "Mysteries" were the three that grabbed me, so in the shopping basket they went!

I remember the "Surround Sound" Stereo CDs from Telarc in the pre-SACD and DVD-A days. Good music and a lot of entertaining Special Effects by Telarc's Chief Recording Engineer Michael Bishop.
The Surround Sound CDs were made with a processor called the Spatializer. In fact, I may still have a couple of these Telarc Spatializer Surround Sound CDs in my collection. Hmm, could be fun via the Surround Master.

And speaking of the Desper Spatializer, there are 2 for sale right now on eBay. They are from Eddie Van Halen's Recording Studio! Guess Eddie isn't doing Surround anymore.....:

Wendy Carlos was on Telarc? That I don't remember... :)

Do you remember when Wendy was Walter ?

Yes. And I remember when Walter tore into Columbia for issuing Switched on Bach on SQ Vinyl vs. CD-4. Said it ruined the Quad mix.
Having heard it on Q8 tape and SQ, I'd have to agree. The Q8 runs rings around the SQ Vinyl - even with the most advanced of decoders.

I remember one of the reviewers in the 70s
on one of the audio mags had said that he had a
CD4 test copy of S/O Bach think it was
E. T.Cannby ?

That could be. It was well known in some circles that Columbia had made CD-4 Test Pressings of some of their Quad Mixes and Recordings for evaluation at the dawn of the 1970's Quad Era. An audio writer/critic like Edward T. Canby may have been well enough connected to pick up such an item.

There was also a 2 7in little LP By a Company that called itself
something like the Little LP com.?
series that I read about that had the same tracks
in SQ QS EV4 UMX
I have never been able to find it
Have you heard or see it?

These two just arrived...

Insane Clown Posse: The Wraith - Shangri La

I've been looking for this since I saw the video for 'Juggalo Homies' in 5.1 on a DTS demo DVD :)

This next one isn't an SACD or DVD-A but a 5.1 DTS-CD...

Brian Wilson: Imagination

Poles apart musically, but both actually rather good :)

i can't imagine why the disc would be Dolby Surround encoded instead of Dolby PL-II since PL-II, in addition to having stereo surrounds, has full-range surrounds and much superior steering/crosstalk cancellation.

BTW, this is kinda nit-picky of me, but I can't help it so please take the info in the manner it is meant, and that is to be helpful. When talking about the original Dolby Stereo system - the one with a single, bandwidth limited, surround channel, its correct name is Dolby Stereo if referring to a theatrical presentation and Dolby Surround when identifying software encoded for home use. Dolby Pro-Logic is a logic decoding system and not an encoding format - the matrix format Dolby Stereo/surround releases are encoded in is called the Dolby MP Matrix, the MP standing for Motion Picture. Confusing things, Pro-Logic II is the name of both the encoding and decoding system so saying a disc is encoded in PL-II is completely correct. I know this kind of thing can be irritating, but I just want everyone to have correct info as it prevents confusion later - and I want to be corrected if I have the wrong info too.

One would imagine it is as such due to PL-II being launched in 2000, whilst Switched on Bach 2000 was released in 1992.

Yup.

I am quite aware of these differences and merely referred to this disc as a "Pro Logic disc" because that would be the decoder required to enjoy it properly.

You're not wrong...

thanks for everyone's contributions & advice here guys, sorry to have stirred up a hornet's nest here.

I wonder whether these Dolby Surround CD posts should be moved and given their own thread?

I only mentioned the Holst Planets Telarc disc here as its a recent acquisition in "the pile" and I didn't know where else to post about it here, as well as not knowing what the dickens it was exactly I had bought!

It could move to the Matrix section. On Telarc, since they used Spatializer and Dolby Surround for their releases, I suppose we could title it as both! :)

Russian Nights - Erich Kunzel Cincinnati Pops Orchestra (Hybrid MultiCh SACD),
The Garden Of Cosmic Speculation - Michael Gandolfi (Hybrid MultiCh SACD),
Dancing In The Dark - Tierney Sutton (Hybrid MultiCh SACD),
Collection - John Denver (Hybrid MultiCh SACD),
If You See Him - Reba McEntire (DTS CD),
Honour & Glory - Ambra (DVD-Audio) *,
Switched On Bach 2000: All-New 25th Anniversary - Wendy Carlos (Dolby Surround 4-D Digital Sound CD!)**.

*Not the DVD-V set of Ambra, its a true MLP Advanced Res DVD-A. For £8, its about £100 cheaper than the SACD!! :p :yikes

**Well its got "Dolby Surround" written all over it! So I guess it'll sound "surround-y" to some degree..!? I cannot WAIT to give this one a spin! It was £15 quid on Amazon UK, so not a huge gamble to outlay if it doesn't pan out so well in surround.. especially since I noticed one on eBay going for $85 (£53!) and another for $109 (£68!)...!!@: :yikes
