Good for you, let us know what you think of it.

With apologies for the previous silliness, an actual revew: :)

I read someone somewhere describing this as a "weird" multi mix. I couldn't disagree more - this is GREAT! Exactly the right treatment for this music, in my opinion. Not only that, but the bottom end got a serious upgrade with this version - there's some nice club-thumpin' bass on this compared to the stereo mix.

Anyway, sorry, I'm sure most of you have been listening to this one for years by now; I'm a little late to the game here. But this is sure the best six bucks this old Todd fan has spent in a long time!

Favorite song is Flaw. Makes me chuckle.

I gotta admit, when this album first came out that track wore thin with me pretty quick, along with "Soulbrother" - couldn't stand that Pro Tools "Hammond organ" (I know, it was part of the irony of that tune, but still - yeech). But man, this 5.1 mix is such a bowl of candy from start to finish! I'm chuckling again too. :)

P.S. My fave is still a tie between "Past" and "Godsaid" - whew! :smokin

I only had time for the first half ("side 1") of Birds of Fire, but it immediate shot to the top of my current listening list. Just fantastic all around.

The Jeff Beck and MahavishnuOrchestra discs fom AF.
Haven't played the Beck yet, but the Mahavishnu is excellent

Yurie Miura - Impression (SACD)

I just got this lovely recital of French Impressionist piano music by Yurie Miura. This 71 and a half-minute disc is filled popular pieces such as Debussy's Clair de lune, Arabesques, Prelude no.8, Rèverie; Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin, La valse; Faure's 4th Nocturne; and Satie's 1st Gymnopédie and Je te veux.

Yurie Miura is completely at home in this gorgeous music, especially in the Debussy. The Multichannel recording is very good and naturally captures the subtle nuances of her playing. Rear speakers are ambient.

I find a number of negative reviews don't always pan out.TRUST YOUR OWN INSTINCTS.

I have purchased many surround recordings with bad reviews only to be P.O.'D when I truly find that they are good mixes after all.

AND also of note TODD mixed the 5.1 of that disc.......cool.

The Old City String Quartet - Mozart
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
Jeff Beck Group - Jeff Beck Group
Yes - Relayer

Yup - I was reminding myself of that last night as I listened to this disc!

Yes! Which of course only causes one to wonder what he could do with the rest of his catalog... The mind reels!!

"Something/Anything?" was remixed into 5.1 and appeared on a couple of pre-order lists for upcoming DVD-A release (almost 15 years ago now) but Warner cancelled it along with a shedload of other potentially amazing records.. :(

Initiation announced and numbered for quad release was a bigger heartbreaker.

The majority of Todd's catalog would be ideal for surround. He released two albums this year. The first, Global, is a standard Todd as one-man-band collection of exquisitely crafted rock/pop tunes. (The current tour to promote it is pretty mind blowing as well.) The second album he released a bit more under the radar is called Ruddans. It's a collaboration with European EDM artists Emil Nikolaisen & Hans-Peter Lindstrom. Althought the album's track listing shows individual tracks, it is actually one piece of continuously streaming music. It's pretty trippy stuff; sort of a modern take on Initiation's "A Treatise on Cosmic Fire." The first thing I thought when I heard it was why hasn't it been mixed into 5.1? It's an album that's screaming out for it.

It pains me to say it, but I've been disappointed with much of Todd's "studio" work in more recent years, mostly because of his choice to forsake real musicians in favor of his MacBook, with widely varying results. Depending on the music, this was either no problem at all (see Liars) or just embarrassing (a Robert Johnson tribute album with fake drums?! Come on, Todd!) But Runddans is the most encouraging thing I've heard from him in many years! And yeah, I know, there's not a lot of instrumental reality here either; but instead it goes the other way, in every direction at once, much like his early stuff that we know & love. In fact, this sounds like they took Todd, Wizard, Initiation, maybe A Cappella, stuffed 'em in a blender and hit the switch! I hope Todd considers more collaborations like this going forward.

You're right, it's a shame there's no 5.1 of this.

Last but not least, I gotta love that album cover! Yikes.

Billy Joel - Streetlife Serenade (SACD)

I finally got a copy of this one. It was well worth the wait. :spot

INITIATION is quite likely mixed in quad and gathering dust in the vault.

This was one of a large number of quad discs announced by the Schwann Record Guide. It's worth noting that when it was listed in their guide, it was available. They were notoriously accurate with quad listings. One can only conclude that it was WEA that supplied this info to Schwann, but delayed the QUAD releases (approx.20 give or take) and then cancelled them all together.

This WEA Quad listing stayed in the Schwann Guide for at least a year before it disappeared. (1976)
This length of time suggests some or most were quad mixed but of course then without warning cancelled by WEA! WEA for their part were the first to kill the quad releases and their investment in the quad (cd-4, Q8, and QR formats) much to the "extreme" disbelief/disappointed quad supporters like us who purchased and supported their label for quad years in the 70's.
