Hey, Lute, do you have the Maazel/Cleveland Pictures on Telarc? If you or anyone else have it on SACD AND have compared it in both performance and fidelity to the Leibowitz/Royal Philharmonic SACD, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I've owned the Maazel/Cleveland version on LP, CD and SACD. It is a very early digital recording.

Hi Linda!

Sure, but give me a little time to get back to you. I just got the Leibowitz SACD the other day. :brew

I realize that I'm kind of asking you to compare apples & oranges. An early DIGITAL recording vs. a classic analog recording from about 20 years before.

No rush. When you get time, it would be appreciated.

Nat King Cole Christmas Album on SACD arrived today

You lucky son of a gun! Please share your thoughts on the sound when you have the time. This has been a dream disc of mine for years and I'm really thankful it actually happened.

Espana showed up today (ordered it THU afternoon... so that was quick).

I've owned the Maazel/Cleveland version on LP, CD and SACD. It is a very early digital recording.

Both of these SACDs are worth having. They offer different approaches to these popular works.

Maazel's performance on Telarc is a more mainstream interpretation and is a popular alternative to the famous Fritz Reiner recording. He uses Ravel's famous orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. It's a solid performance that has plenty of fireworks. Telarc's early digital (50kHz) recording has been successfully transferred to DSD and sounds great. The sound is fuller and bigger than René Leibowitz's classic 1962 recording on the AP SACD.

Leibowitz's performance is rather special, though. He tweaked the orchestration of these works. He did some extensive research and created his own version, which is more of a "walk on the wild side" approach, especially with "A Night on Bald Mountain". The performances have more character than Maazel's. The playing of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is wonderfully alive and organic, too. Some people might not like Leibowitz's approach, but it's one of my favorites. The 1962 recording sounds incredible for its age. There is some tape hiss and the early analogue recording technology is a little dry and doesn't have the range of today's recordings, but it has a wonderful airiness. The soundstage has better depth and instrument separation than Telarc's digital recording.

Charles-Marie Widor

La Nuit de Walpurgis, op.60
Violin concerto
Symphony no.1, op.16

Royal Scottish National Orchestra
Sergey Levitin (violin)
Martin Yates (conductor)

A beautiful performance of these Romantic works.

Dutton's stereo recording is very good with a warm, natural soundstage.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Hurricane Box Set from Import Cds ($195 on their 10% off sale)

Anthony Wilson - Jack of Hearts SACD on the same sale

How is the SRV SACD box set? Looks interesting but a bit pricey.

It's not quite in my hands yet, I have to pop over the border today and pick it up. ( I have a PO Box in Washington).
The other problem is my Denon is in the shop for a laser replacement and the tech is having trouble with it so it may be awhile before I can play them.
The money spent on this set probably should have gone towards a new player

How's the bass on the mono version? My mono download of this title has no bass and sounds like a cassette.

The bass is not great on the mono layer of the SACD, either.

I know hit radio was AM back then and Brian Wilson had mono in mind, so he put a lot of effort into it. But for the most part, I prefer the stereo mix. First and foremost, the vocals definitely benefit. They have a fuller, more natural sound...really opening up and blending well together. This also gives the songs more bass. Your Summer Dream sounds beautiful in stereo. Interestingly, the fidelity on the mono instrumentals like The Rocking Surfer sounds better. I prefer the mono version of this song. But, this song shows its age and suffers a little (distortion?) on both the mono & stereo versions. Anyway, if I had to choose between the mono OR stereo, I would go for the stereo version.

For fun, I compared AP's SACD stereo mixes of Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe and In My Room to a Japanese RBCD I have. While the RBCD isn't bad, the openness and clarity of the soundstage on AP's SACD was clearly apparent.

This one came in the mail today. I was hoping it would be "in stock" at some of the less expensive sites...but it wasn't available at any of my usual sites so I had to find the best way to get this one without buying the required minimums at Acoustic Sounds or Elusive Disc to get free shipping so I used a 10% discount at Elusive Disc and their shipping was reasonable($4.41)for a single purchase...I ended up paying $26.99 for the disc plus $4.41 for shipping(no tax)which totals $31.40....they shipped it on Tuesday via First Class Mail from Anderson Indiana and I received it today which is very good considering Thursday was a holiday.
