The worst aspects of the current Yes reissues are price...
Well, no, price is irrelevant to me. They've been my favourite band for 50 years, and I've wanted them to go the whole hog with the reissues - like Floyd, and immerse me each time in Roger Dean posters, marbles, coasters, and scarves.

I'll even put up with 10 or 20 discs, like the Crimson box sets. :p

The best 5.1 mix of BSS is on the 2000 DVDA from Rhino. It also has a bonus track of Lucky Man in 5.1. It's been a while since I listened to it, but I thought the later Jakko mix was generally pretty good up until the last track. The mix of Karn Evil 9 3rd Impression is unaccountably missing the voice of the computer during the climactic confrontation - you can only hear a very faint echo of it in the other channels - which pretty much destroys the point of the track. That glaring error doesn't reflect well on Jakko and/or whoever was doing QC for that release.

The entire ELP catalog needs to be revisited in Atmos, but only if a good mixing engineer is given a free hand to make their own decisions. Apparently there are a lot of alternate track/takes to choose from.
I have that disc and just pulled it from my shelf to re-listen! Thanks for the reminder! I agree someone needs to “rework” the whole ELP catalogue!

The same thing also applied to SACD players. I'd ask about them, and from the look on their faces, I could hear the crickets.
Reminds me of an experience I had when I was auditioning new speakers at my favourite store. I had told the salesman that I was bringing some favourite DVD-A's and SACD's to audition. I was assured that all necessary analogue cables would be in place before I arrived. When silence only was heard from the 7.1 source, my salesman checked the connections to discover that the interconnects were removed. Upon investigation, we found that a younger salesman discovered them there, decided that they were unnecessary and redundant, and removed them from the setup. When my guy started explaining to the younger guy, that guy did not know what my guy was talking about. And this when DVD-A's were still being sold in local stores.

I only can find a stream of it from Amazon and not a physical release to pre-order. Have you seen a place to preorder the physical set?

Just a reminder for anyone not wanting/needing the Atmos mix, the comparable Fragile super deluxe (atmos) box is at $40 when on sale. Will they print less of these? Maybe, maybe not. Let one's wallet be the guide.

This one might hold more appeal than the last two releases for non-Atmos fans, since the stereo & 5.1 mixes were completely rebuilt from scratch (like on the recent Crimson Larks and Red reissues). They're not just slightly-tweaked versions of the 2013 remixes.

Is that good or bad? I've never been a fan of stereo remixes and I like the original 5.1 mix! I have several versions of Close To The Edge already, to plunk down more cash I would have to know that the new surround mix(s) are significantly better. Better to me would require the mix to be even more immersive!

Thanks for the heads-up. I have resisted the two previous special editions as I don't have an Atmos capable system, except via headphones from my mobile/cell phone and I cannot justify the cost of the box set for the compromised version of Atmos that I do have.

However, I am going to have to shell out for this Close To The Edge release because of the live at the Rainbow album as I was at that gig. Until now Yessongs was the only way to hear any of the (two) songs from the Rainbow but issuing the whole concert is a totally unexpected and very welcome surprise. I now have Siberian Khatru to listen to in the meantime which is a great taster. Is it my imagination or is this recording way better than the Yessongs version, albeit from a different gig? Just checked and...yes it is! It will be interesting to hear and compare Close To The Edge and Starship Trooper as they are the two songs from this performance on Yessongs.

This version finally includes the far superior 'dry' mix of 'America', of which I never thought I'd see an official digital release in my lifetime. I guess I'm going to pay $100 for that.

(well, that, and the complete Rainbow Dec 15 1972 show)

The Steven Wilson 'do overs' series continues; I wonder if he will get Close to the Edge right this time?
