I have this lp. This is a great thread. Thanks to fredblue for starting this. I wonder if we can find out who did the mixes on the Ovation quads and the various Japanese quad albums. It is too bad that there doesn't seem to be hardly any Japanese members here. It would help to read the kanji on the album credits.

My Beatles 1+ turned up today (I haven't played it yet, so I'm not disappointed, yet!), and I noticed Jeff Lynne is down on the credits list for the 5.1 mixes of 'Free As A Bird' & 'Real Love' (along with others).

Yes indeed.

That highlighted link(post#139) is very informative in that not only does it provide ELO'S 5.1 and Quad music tracks and albums but also points out Jeff Lynne's mixes in surround as well.
Worth noting his work with George Harrison and of course his early quad mixes with ELO,and of course they're unreleased quad mixes, how disappointing.

I believe he also gets credit on "Anthology" Beatles dvd.

fizzywiggs post about Dieter Dierks piqued my interest and I went through the quad discography because I vaguely knew there were a bunch of SQ quad releases that originated in Germany. It turns out that Dierks was involved with most of them, either because they were mixed at his studio (Dierks Studios) or he engineered, mixed/remixed or produced the albums himself. See below:

Most of the credits are pretty vague, ie they don't say 'quadraphonic remix' or similar, but at the same time I think a lot of these may have been single-inventory releases (ie no separate stereo mix), so it may be possible to attribute credit to Dierks for some of these quad mixes. Perhaps someone knowledgeable about the German quad scene could chime in...

We're really veering in to the territory of the unprovable here, but based on the chronology below I think it's possible that Geoff Emerick did more quad mixes than the two we've been able to credit him with. This is his activity during the 'quad years':

1973 Paul McCartney & Wings 'Band On The Run' [CREDITED]
1974 America 'Holiday' [NO QUAD CREDITS] (Recorded & mixed at AIR Studios)
1974 Mahavishnu Orchestra 'Apocalypse' (scheduled but unreleased quad mix, recorded/mixed @ AIR Studios)
1975 America 'Hearts' [NO QUAD CREDITS] (Recorded at Record Plant but mixed at AIR Studios)
1975 Jeff Beck 'Blow By Blow' [NO QUAD CREDITS] (Recorded at AIR Studios - engineering credited to "Denim Bridges")
1975 Karthago 'Rock 'N Roll Testament' [CREDITED] (Mixed at AIR Studios)
1975 Wings 'Venus & Mars' [CREDITED]
1976 Jeff Beck 'Wired' [NO QUAD CREDITS] (partially recorded at AIR Studios & partially mixed at Caribou Ranch)

I know the 'Denim Bridges' thing is slightly tenuous, but would someone of George Martin's stature really use an unknown engineer to record Jeff Beck?

I think what's clear from this chronology is a couple of things - one is that AIR Studios in London must have been equipped for quad, based on the fact that the inner cover of the Karthago album specifically states "remixed by Geoff Emerick at AIR Studios, London, Dec. '74". Then you can see that even when Emerick recorded elsewhere for George Martin (ie America's 'Hearts' at the Record Plant in California) they took the tapes back to AIR Studios to do the mix. In the case of Wired, they did some of the mixing at Caribou Ranch, which belonged to James William Guercio, Chicago's producer - Caribou was definitely quad equipped because Wayne Tarnowski did the quad mixes of the Chicago albums there. I guess the only way to find out for sure would be if someone could ask the man himself.

It's also interesting that Columbia Records didn't seem to credit quad remix engineers for it's British acts, when it was very dilligent about doing so for almost all of it's other releases. I wonder if a back-cover credit was a union requirement for its American engineers, or if it was just because when the tapes were sent over from the UK they didn't include the information? In particular I'm thinking of the following:

Argent - In Deep
Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow
Jeff Beck - Wired
Mott The Hoople - The Hoople
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

When it comes to Dieter Dierks, there is no doubt he is responsible for the final quad product.Where it becomes a bit hazy however is "who or whom mixed the albums in discreet tape .
Dierks had two quad equipped studios and some of the liner note credits do indeed state "quad studio"in one manner or another.
I truly believe he is the maestro when it comes to some of the quad discreet mixes (compilations likely) and a number of others likely.

Dierks is surely responsible for all encoding via his studios, of this there seems to be no doubt.

Two examples of encoding but not mixing come to mind, ASH RA TEMPLE VI and NEKTAR DOWN TO EARTH. Ashra vi is Manuel Gottsching, and Down to Earth seems to be Barry Hammond (this last one is a bit unclear/unspecific).

I think Steelydave has done a marvelous job in pointing out Dieter Dierks huge quad contribution. However I think it necessary to point out some of the ambiguity we face when it comes to these quad recordings.

When it comes to matrix encoded product this is the reality. In the final analysis does it really matter, probably not. These are the liner notes we have to work with whether info is fully complete or not .

Additions and corrections can always be adjusted.

Hi.
I think Lute imageCTYF9MUL.jpg is from Japan if someone gets incontact with him he may help?

I have this lp. This is a great thread. Thanks to fredblue for starting this. I wonder if we can find out who did the mixes on the Ovation quads and the various Japanese quad albums. It is too bad that there doesn't seem to be hardly any Japanese members here. It would help to read the kanji on the album credits.

Those Japanese only quad releases of Motown acts, who mixed them? Were tapes mixed in 4 channel in America then sent to Japan or what?

Unfortunately the Japanese Motown CD-4's have no information or technical credits for the quad mixes on either the jackets or the paper inserts with the song titles/lyrics/album credits on them. I have all of the Japanese Motown quads (bar two) and they're all like this.

It's my supposition that the quad mixes were done by Motown in the US somewhere, for a few reasons. One is that Motown released two Q8's in the US, one of which was Diana Ross at Caesar's Palace, which was also a Japanese CD-4 - it seems more likely that they mixed it, and then gave JVC Japan a copy of the mix to put out on CD4, rather than sending their multitrack master tapes to JVC Japan to do a quad mix, then having the tapes sent back to them and putting them out. Motown was incredibly picky about who did their mixing and producing - it was only around that time that they finally let their top acts (Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder) mix and produce their own albums. I highly doubt they'd let some random Japanese guy do quad mixes of their top acts, especially if any of them were seeing US release. Secondly is that Diana Ross 'The Last Time I Saw Him' had a 2CD deluxe edition on Hip-O Select in 2007 which had a stereo fold down of the quad mix of the album (only released in Japanese CD4) on the 2nd disc. This means that Universal has a copy of the quad master in their vaults, which would be unlikely if JVC Japan had done the quad mix - there's no corporate affiliation between the two companies, even today. Lastly (and slightly more circumstantially) is that Motown distributed CTI Records in 1974-1975, which is when CTI put out the majority of their quad product - showing that Motown had at least peripheral involvement with producing and distributing quad in the US.

I suspect what happened was Motown embarked on a program to start remixing their product for quad with the Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye live albums the first titles, coming out on Q8 in the US in 1974, and more scheduled for the following year. Either those two titles didn't sell well (I'm sure they didn't) or Motown realised quad was already in a terminal death spin by 1975 so they didn't bother to release any more of the albums they'd already mixed. Meanwhile, JVC Japan is looking for product for their CD4W series of records and convinces Motown to let them release all their quad mixes and Motown probably figures 'why not?' so they can at least recoup some of the money they spent mixing them. I can especially imagine this being the case because by 1975 Motown's star was already starting to decline after having moved from Detroit to LA a couple of years previous - a lot of their big acts had left the label by then, including both the Four Tops and The Temptations, Gladys Knight, Martha Reeves, and producers Norman Whitfield and the Holland/Dozier/Holland songwriting team - they were probably looking to make money anywhere they could.

I've looked at the backs of hundreds of records over the last few weeks and there are a few labels that seem to not include quad remix credits at all. Off the top of my head, they include:

ABC Command (B.B. King, Four Tops, Rufus, Steely Dan, Jim Croce, etc.) some record labels say "Remixed for quadraphonic from original multi-track sound sources."

A&M (Carpenters, Joe Cocker, Herb Alpert, Rick Wakeman, Quincy Jones, Carole King, etc.) The majority of the A&M quad releases carry no remix credits (aside from what we've put in fredblue's list) but I think the evidence indicates that Marv Bornstein and Bart Chiate most likely did most or all of the uncredited quad mixes, as they were A&M's in-house quad remix team.

AVCO (The Stylistics, Van McCoy) like the Motown CD4s, these have no credits. The Stylistics were produced by Thom Bell and recorded at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia so it's possible that the one of Sigma guys that did the Philly quads for Columbia (Joe Tarsia, Arthur Stoppe, Don Murray, Jay Mark, etc.) did these.

CTI Records (Deodato, Airto, George Benson, Don Sebesky, Stanley Turrentine, etc.)

Project 3 (Enoch Light, etc.)

Ovation (60-70 Quad releases) I haven't found any of their records that have quad remix credits, but I have found a Billboard article (included below) saying that a Bonnie Koloc album was being recorded and mixed by Tom Jung at Studio 80 in Minnesota. I believe Ovation was headquartered around there somewhere so it's possible all their quad mixes were done there and/or by him. Interestingly, after he closed Studio 80, Tom Jung went on to found DMP records which released 5.1 DTS CD's in the 90's, and (I think) the first multichannel SACD in the early 2000's.

RCA RCA released in the neighbourhood of 200 quad releases, I don't think I've seen one that has quad remix credits. Even The Best Of The Guess Who SACD that Audio Fidelity did doesn't have quad remix credits.

Stax (Isaac Hayes, Staples Singers) I think all of their vinyl releases were stereo jackets with quad stickers affixed over top. Judging from the Billboard article I posted earlier in this thread, the Stax quad mixes were done by Stax engineer Henry Bush at the CBS/Columbia quad studio in New York, overseen by Don Young and Al Lawrence.

Warner Bros. A lot of the quad product by their bigger artists (Doobie Bros, Carly Simon, Alice Cooper, America, etc.) has no quad credits - it's possible these were mixed simultaneously in quad and stereo by the same engineers, hence not being credited twice.

tomjung.jpg

Interesting supposition on the Motown's, Steelydave.

And those WEA discs, I think your probably right on the nose with that.Whoever did the stereo did the quad and it's why no specific reference is made to quad mix and therefore becomes identical to the stereo jacket.

When it comes to The Guess Who, I thought Brian Christian was being credited with the quad mix? And It's totally plausible he did most of their quads as he was their go to engineer at RCA.
What can I say, crappy liner note credits from the Quadradiscs for sure.

I was looking at the Q8 of the Marvin Gaye Live album, one of the two Q8's Motown issued in the US - the Q8 is heavily edited compared to the regular stereo release. The Q8 is almost 9 minutes shorter than the regular stereo version, which runs about 44:30. Unlike most Q8s that had their material edited to make them fit the format, this tape has material equally removed from each side - on side 1 'Flyin High In The Friendly Sky/Mercy Mercy Me' is deleted entirely, and 'Jan' is faded 30 seconds early, and on Side 2 'Keep Gettin It On' and the band introductions are both deleted.

I don't think this had anything to do with the limitations of the 8-track format - there are tons of tapes that run 45 minutes, and some run even longer. What I think they were doing was preparing this album for a CD-4 release that never happened. If you've seen any of the Japanese CD-4 albums, you'll have noticed they have huge run-out grooves because inner groove distortion interfered badly with CD-4 decoding. As a result, the amount of music they could get on each side of the LP was reduced - probably 18 or 19 minutes per side maximum for CD-4 as opposed to normal LPs which often have 22 or 23. There are actually a bunch of released Japanese CD-4s that have tracks missing because of this runtime limitation including The Guess Who's 'American Woman' and 'Share The Land' on RCA and The Jazz Messengers self-titled release on JVC.

So I guess the question is, as Motown intending to release Marvin Gaye 'Live!' as a CD-4 in the US, or Japan, or both? If they were, why was it cancelled - was it because they got cold feet about quad entirely, some sort of technical issue with CD-4 cutting, or did they feel that people would complain that the quad version was missing music compared to the stereo version? I think it's pretty intriguing, the idea that Motown may have been gearing up for US CD-4 releases in 1975 before everything went south.

And my latest pile of quad mix/remix engineer credits - this is all from records I've seen the backs of with my own eyes...

I was also thinking that in terms of listing the credits, for albums where two people are credited for the remix, that they should each get the individual credit under their name maybe with the notation "(co-credited)" or something beside their name. That way you eliminate stuff like 1 mix credited to 'Tim Geelan and Ray Moore' by giving Tim Geelan a credit and Ray Moore a credit to their individual categories along with the notation that it was a co-credit.

Ken Rasek

Paul Berliner with Kudu-The Sun Rises Late Here (79)

Dieter Dierks

Passport-Handmade (73) as previously mentioned by Steelydave

Glen Kolotkin

Carlos Santana and Alice Coltrane-Illuminations (74?) My lp insert states him with Tom Coster altough it is also the stereo insert.Their is a San Francisco-Columbia Records engineer, Phil Brown? I think who mentions somewhere on QQ, Kolotkin mixed many early Santana quads and Carlos was present.

Bruce Botnick has a final mix credit on my quad copy of Billy Joel-Turnstiles.

Alan Bown, known for mixing quads has the credit on Argent-In Deep (although it's probabaly the same as the stereo credit)

Richard Perry, who produced many quad artists such as; Barbra Streisand, Harry Nilsson, Carly Simon, Ringo Starr and Burton Cummings during their prolific quad album release years has two I think he is directly involved with mix.
He is named as "audio producer" and producer for:

Ringo Starr-Goodnight Vienna (74)
Harry Nilsson-Nilsson Schmilsson (72)

Carson Taylor

Raymond Lewanthal-Toy Symphonies (76)
