Listening to the hybrid Japanese stereo SACD of Bitches Brew (Mark Wilder version) while drinking a Bitches Brew from Dogfish Brewery. How cool is that! :)

@Clint:
That Belafonte record is one of those that make even a clock radio sound good, such great fidelity and middle range!

Sometimes it takes a long time for me to find out what the records are that I like. The DJs on the wireless rarely say what they're called or who they're by...

I've bought a couple of superb 1980s 12" singles in the last week or two - Mirror Man by Human League, and Gloria by Laura Branigan. There are more that I want. I live in hope that the DJ on Lakeland Radio will give me a clue or two to go on...

I'm making an effort to begin backing up my DVD-A disc collection after The Beatles Love went haywire. I downloaded the free trial version of DVD Audio Extractor and it seems to work quite well when converting to 6 channel FLAC. My first conversion was my most pricey purchase, the Chicago (II) DVD-A. I have an OPPO-93 and all is good over USB except for the gapless playback issue on the Ballad For A Girl In Buchannon and Better End Soon pieces. I seem to remember that the OPPO-93 doesn't support gapless playback so the question is, am I on the right track as far as backing up?

am I on the right track as far as backing up?

I think so. Converting lossless surround mixes to interleaved FLAC or WAV files is a great way to digitally preserve them should the discs start acting up. For lossy discs, I have actually been ripping the DTS stream directly (using DVDAE) as .dts files. They play perfectly fine in VLC media player (where I now play all my surround files) and they don't take up nearly as much space as FLAC or WAV files, which is great for DTS surround mixes as the quality will not improve just because it's encoded as a lossless FLAC or WAV file. Hope that helps! :)

According to Super Deluxe Edition, the Crowded House catalog is set for expanded reissues in late 2016. Of course I would love to hear the albums get the surround treatment, but I'm not holding my breath......

Not sure about their entire catalogue, but the first album is definitely under Universal's ownership since it acquired Capitol Records in the great EMI selloff, so if these reissues are similar to the Tears for Fears and Simple Minds reissues that have cropped up in the last few years, maybe there will at least be a reissue of the first album in surround on DVD-A in a box set along with a stand-alone HFPA Blu-Ray release. I for one would love a Blu-Ray reissue of this first album of theirs as the DVD-A authoring and design was always a little too clunky for me, but besides the amazing music, it does have one stellar surround mix, so Hope Springs Eternal that they make the best of this reissue program! :)

Thanks rt. My DTS Surround discs are also on the list for backup, I'll look into the VLC media player as well.

Right now on MTV Live is the premiere of the new concert film "GeorgeFest", a tribute concert to George Harrison, filmed in Los Angeles 2014.
It's really good so far! :)

I have this Nat King Cole HFPA and it's one weird disc. Codecs consist of:
2.0 DTS-HD MA
2.0 LPCM Stereo
2.0 Dolby TrueHD
Stereo plays fine. DTS is picked up (HDMI) by my AVR as Neo 6: Cinema and Dolby TrueHD is decoded as ProLogic II: Movie. Huh. What makes this weirder is how great the Neo 6 sounds on my system! :confused: I am definitely an "ignorance is bliss" kinda guy ;)

Edit: separation is incredible in Neo 6....on some songs. Other songs use absolutely nothing but the centre channel and my subs. Freaky.
