I ordered this straight away. Interesting that a new Atmos mix got done a couple of months ago and now this retro release is being released in Japan. Joel is popular enough in the USA and EU to warrant a 50th anniversary deluxe edition for those markets as well, don't you think? I would not be surprised if something a bit less exotic would be released later this year (with perhaps a bluray that has the Atmos mix on it?).

This reminds me...

The last time I ordered some discs from Japan I got shafted for import duties and VAT. I can't remember what the import threshold was!
Just to advise that CD Japan now collect the VAT with the order and the last few deliveries from them came via DHL straight to my door with no add on charges. I have just ordered Piano Man and the total came to a tad under £60 including delivery and VAT and I don't expect to pay any other charges. Also I was able to pay in JP yen with my global payment card which avoids the foreign currency transaction fee from the bank and is available at no extra cost on my account. So the only variable is the actual exchange rate when completing the payment. Hope that helps.

Thanks @omega4, that's really good information ;)

I was excited about this release, then I read the price and all the extra junk that it’s paying for and decided to hold off until I could get something simpler, like a standxalone BD or SACD.

Sorry.

Many (or at least some) of the surround mixes on Sony Japan's 7" SACD series have previously appeared on a Sony disc in the past, but I can't recall even one of the fresh new ones (vintage quad) appearing later on a less expensive release? Someone may correct me. But it looks like when they do go the distance and release a rare one, it thus far never appears again in that sought after lower cost edition. Like "Wired" in quad, I am not expecting a nicer-priced SACD to come along in the US, nor Santana III in quad in the US.

In other words, you really could be waiting forever for the simpler standalone release. Sorry.

It’s not like I’ve been waiting for this and am anxious about it. I have a lot of surround music to listen to. Maybe not as much as @Clement, but it’s still more than I think I’ll be able to catch up to in the next five years, and there will be plenty more to come along in the meantime.

I just can’t see falling for spending money on a bunch of stuff I don’t want in order to get something I like, but don’t adore.

I listened to the Atmos mix of this last night on Apple. It was pretty good. I did however seem to think the title cut maybe lacked some "carnival type" :p energy that the stereo mix has given my muscle memory over the decades. There is also a bit of unbalanced volume going on the rears to my ears. Some of the instruments are much louder in the rear mix than they probably need to be. Still much better than the god-awful Atmos mix on the Nylon Curtain.

My hesitation at purchasing this SACD is that the @QQ polling on the quad mix indicates a pretty lackluster mix with the average vote being an 8. Granted there are only 9 votes. Maybe I just stick with the Atmos and hope it doesn't disappear one day.

Isn't it more like $60-ish, when you include currency conversion and shipping?1
Depending on whether you bundle the purchase with other titles, how your bank does conversions, whether you pay in yen, etc. the price can vary, a bit.
At essence, here, we just have a subjective, personal issue of how much we are willing to or not willing to pay for an album we want.

Is this title a bit more expensive than normal, due to a CD and a DVD? Yes. It it exorbitantly expensive? Not in my opinion. Is anyone justified in not purchasing because of extra cost, no matter how slight? Of course. I'm just pointing out what seems, to me, to be a mountain made from a mole hill. If the title is enticing, I think the price is right. The extras in this set happen to be of interest, to me, btw, so it's not like I'm buying scarves and marbles with the extra cost.

Of course, if they did toss in a cool scarf, I'd wear it. Pretty chilly around these parts. :hi

Pre-order happily placed, along with an order for Welcome (Santana). The shipping for ordering 2 discs somewhat offsets the increased price of Piano Man. Besides, when PM goes out of print I expect it to command some serious prices on the usual sites. Inevitably, someone will be posting on QQ, complaining about how they missed out on the initial release and that they subsequently are being asked to sell an internal organ to buy an OOP copy.

I have the other two 7 inch sleeve versions (52nd Street and The Stranger), so this is an automatic buy for me. For what you get (3 discs), the price seems reasonable. I don't live in the US, so almost everything I buy online has a fairly significant shipping charge. That's life. I always try to order multiple items to compensate. For this one, I ordered the "Boy and the Heron" soundtrack and the BluRay/CD of Peter Gabriel's i/o along with Piano Man.

The Quadio discs go for 25 dollars a piece, right? 1 disc in a jewel box. For $15 more, you get an extra CD, an extra DVD and lavish packaging. I know you can bundle the Quadios and get a discount and a lot of people on here are in the USA so p&p is likely less than having it sent from Japan, but still I do not find this Billy Joel release expensive in compariscon (leaving p&P out of the equation).
Given that these days I have to pay the smaller retailers in the UK (e.g. SDE shop) between 8 and 10 euros for p&p just to send it from the UK to the Netherlands (which is like 100 km) AND that it will easily take more than a week to get here, I do not really mind paying another tenner for having it brought to me from Japan (and quite often within a considerably shorter timeframe...). Obviously I also try to combine orders (I now added Tapestry to my order).
To add some perspective. I Don't know about other countries but smokers (which I am not) pay 10 euros for a package of 20 cigarettes these days. A simple Coke in a regular bar will set you back at least 3 euros. A simple coffee at Starbucks (or a similar chain): 3,50. Throw in toppings or specials and you easily pay 6,50. Ordering in a meal: 15 euros p.p.
I get that spending a total of $60 for one release is not something to be casual about: it *is* serious money. And obviously you can spend your money only once, but if I see what silly money some pay for day to day 'necessities'... And don't get me started on the excorbitant pricing of vinyl re-issues; I consider myself lucky to not have been infected by that particular virus...

Amazon Japan has a few copies of 52nd Street for $33 plus shipping - must have found a box of them during a stock check that had fell behind some shelving because I was under the impression that it was oop (at least CD Japan were unable to get hold of copies when I last checked).

I picked up a copy a few weeks ago and yes, its the legit Sony 7" mini LP packaged job.

It's even cheaper right now - less than $28. The lowest price I've ever seen for this set.
